Welcome to one of Auckland’s best-kept secrets. If you’re a local looking for a quick nature fix after work, or a visitor keen to see a different side of the city, the Arch Hill Scenic Reserve Twist and Shout Track is a must-visit. Tucked quietly between the vibrant, trendy suburbs of Grey Lynn and Arch Hill, this tiny but mighty 6.16-hectare green pocket feels a world away from the busy streets of Central Auckland.
The terrain is generally characterised by a narrow, well-formed clay and dirt path that snakes its way through the valley. As the name "Twist and Shout" suggests, the trail winds and curves gracefully through a layered landscape of regenerating forest. You will encounter a few gentle ups and downs, some wooden steps, and exposed tree roots that add a bit of natural texture to your walk.
Because this reserve is a cherished urban green space, it is a popular spot for the whole community. It is incredibly kid-friendly, making it a fantastic spot to introduce little ones to the magic of the New Zealand bush without driving out to the ranges. It is also dog-friendly (just keep your furry friend on a lead), so your four-legged companion can enjoy sniffing out the local flora.
One important thing to keep in mind: the Twist and Shout Track is a shared-use trail, primarily known to locals as an intermediate mountain biking track. While walkers are warmly welcomed, you will want to keep your eyes and ears open for cyclists winding their way down the slopes. The mountain biking community is highly respectful, but a friendly "heads up" goes a long way here!
The ultimate highlight of the walk is the dramatic contrast between the urban and the natural. One minute you are walking past historic villa-lined streets, and the next, you are surrounded by towering pūriri trees and lush ferns. The forest canopy is incredibly thick in places, filtering the sunlight into a beautiful, dappled emerald glow that is a dream for amateur photographers.
Parking for Arch Hill Scenic Reserve is primarily available on surrounding residential streets, including entrances off Great North Road, Ivanhoe Road (specifically around 89 Ivanhoe Road, Grey Lynn), and nearby side streets like Cooper Street and Niger Street. While generally free, spaces can be limited during peak times, especially on weekends or sunny afternoons. Arriving earlier in the day is recommended to secure a spot and fully enjoy the neighbourhood atmosphere.

Loop
As you wander deeper into the gully, look out for the massive, mature pūriri trees. These ancient giants of the Auckland volcanic field have survived the surrounding urbanisation and stand as proud guardians of the reserve. Their glossy green leaves and bright pinkish-red berries are a beautiful sight year-round.
The reserve also functions as a vital ecological stepping stone. It acts as a green corridor, linking pockets of native bush across the central city, which allows native birds to travel safely between the Hauraki Gulf islands, the Waitākere Ranges, and inner-city parks.
While street parking is generally free, spaces can fill up quickly during peak hours—especially on sunny weekend afternoons when locals head out to enjoy the sunshine. To secure a park easily, we recommend arriving a bit earlier in the morning or during the mid-week lull.
What to bring: Even though it is a short 30-minute walk, we recommend wearing sturdy closed-toe shoes with decent grip, as the clay track can be slippery when damp. Bring a reusable water bottle, and don't forget your camera or smartphone to capture the beautiful filtered light.
Best time of day: Early morning is magical for birdwatching and avoiding the mountain bike traffic. Alternatively, a late afternoon stroll just before sunset offers a lovely golden light filtering through the trees.
For decades, passionate local volunteer groups and the Auckland Council have worked tirelessly to eradicate weeds, plant thousands of native trees, and restore the ecological health of this 6.16-hectare pocket. This ongoing kaitiakitanga (guardianship) has successfully brought native birdlife back to the heart of the inner west. Walking here connects you directly to this inspiring story of urban ecological restoration.
Whether you are looking for a quick mid-week escape to clear your mind or a weekend family outing, the Arch Hill Scenic Reserve Twist and Shout Track delivers a perfect, pint-sized dose of Kiwi nature right on the city's doorstep.
