If you are looking for a trail that perfectly captures the rugged, rolling charm of South Canterbury, the Big Easy Track in Waimate is a must-add to your itinerary. Don’t let the name completely fool you, though—while the "Big Easy" is designed with a smooth surface and manageable gradients, it still offers a satisfying physical challenge that will have your heart rate up and your lungs filled with that crisp, clean country air.
The journey is a 6.7-kilometre out-and-back experience that traverses the beautiful Hunters Hills. What makes this walk so engaging is the sheer variety of the landscape. You start your adventure tucked away in the cool, dappled light of native bush near Point Bush Road. As you begin the ascent, the scent of damp earth and moss gives way to the resinous aroma of towering pine plantations. The track then opens up significantly as you climb higher, emerging into expansive open grasslands that feel quintessentially "Mainland" New Zealand.
The trail has benefited from recent, high-quality upgrades. You’ll notice the path is wide and well-drained, with the once-notorious steep pinches softened to make the 322-metre elevation gain feel more like a steady burn than a vertical scramble. Because it’s a shared-use trail, you’ll likely see mountain bikers enjoying the flowy "Green" rated descent, but there is plenty of room for everyone. For walkers, the return trip usually takes about two hours at a steady pace. It is a fantastic option for families, as the track is kid-friendly and offers plenty of "look at that!" moments to keep younger hikers motivated. Just a quick heads-up for those with furry friends: this specific track is not dog-friendly, so you’ll need to leave your pups at home for this one.
As you reach the upper sections, the sense of scale really hits you. The "Big Easy" isn't just a walk; it’s a transition from the intimate forest floor to the vast South Island sky. Whether you are pushing a brisk pace for a workout or taking it slow to soak in the scenery, the trail feels rewarding every step of the way.
The undisputed crown jewel of this trail is the White Horse monument. Perched high on the hill, this striking landmark is more than just a photo opportunity; it is a tribute to the Clydesdale horses that played a pivotal role in clearing the land and building the Waimate district. Seeing the monument up close is a powerful reminder of the region’s colonial history, but the views from this vantage point are what will truly take your breath away.
Primary parking for the lower bush section of the Whitehorse Big Easy Track is available at 228 Point Bush Road, Waimate, with clear signage on the corner of Mill Road and Point Bush Road. For those wishing to access the upper section of the track, parking is available at the carpark located at the Whitehorse monument.

Out and back
Looking eastward, the landscape unfolds like a giant green-and-gold patchwork quilt. You can trace the sprawling Waimate township below and follow the vibrant farmlands all the way to the shimmering blue horizon of the Pacific Ocean. On a clear day, the coastal curve of South Canterbury is nothing short of spectacular.
Turn your gaze westward, and the scenery shifts from pastoral to alpine. The majestic southern mountains, including the Kakanui and St. Mary ranges, provide a jagged, snow-capped backdrop that contrasts beautifully with the rolling hills in the foreground. It’s one of those rare spots where you can appreciate the proximity of the mountains to the sea in a single panoramic sweep.
For the photographers among us, the golden hour just before sunset is pure magic here. The light hits the white concrete of the horse and turns the tussock grasslands into a sea of glowing amber. Even if you aren't a pro with a lens, the sheer scale of the vista makes it one of the best "bang for your buck" viewpoints in the Canterbury region.
Finding the Big Easy Track is straightforward, and Waimate is a lovely town to navigate. There are two main ways to approach the walk depending on whether you want to start from the bottom or the top.
The primary trailhead for the lower bush section is located at 228 Point Bush Road. As you drive toward the hills from the Waimate town centre, keep an eye out for clear signage at the corner of Mill Road and Point Bush Road. This lower carpark is the best place to start if you want the full 6.7km experience and the rewarding climb through the forest.
Alternatively, if you are short on time or want to focus on the views at the top, you can drive to the upper carpark located right at the Whitehorse monument. This allows you to explore the upper grasslands and enjoy the panoramas without the full ascent from the valley floor. Both parking areas are well-maintained and easy to access with a standard vehicle.
The diversity of the habitat along the Big Easy means you’ll likely encounter some of New Zealand’s most beloved avian locals. The lower native bush sections are a chorus of song, especially in the early morning.
The best time for birdwatching is early morning or late afternoon when the forest is most active. Bring a pair of binoculars if you have them, especially for spotting the falcons against the hillsides.
The Big Easy Track is a true four-season trail, each offering a unique perspective on the Waimate landscape.
Waimate is a town steeped in history, often referred to as the "Clydesdale Capital" of New Zealand. The Big Easy Track and the White Horse monument are central to this identity. The monument was the brainchild of local resident Norman Hayman and was constructed in the 1960s using 60 tonnes of concrete. It stands as a permanent "thank you" to the heavy horses that worked the land when this area was being settled.
Before the arrival of Europeans, the South Canterbury region was a significant area for Waitaha, Kāti Māmoe, and Ngāi Tahu. The Hunters Hills (Te Tari a Te Kaumira) provided a rich source of mahinga kai (food gathering) for Māori moving through the district.
Today, the track represents a modern chapter in Waimate’s story—one of community spirit and outdoor recreation. The maintenance of the trail is a testament to local volunteers and the district council, ensuring that the "Big Easy" remains a top-tier destination for both locals and visitors.
After you’ve conquered the "Big Easy," you’ll definitely have earned a treat. Luckily, Waimate has some fantastic spots to refuel, all within a very short drive (or a decent cool-down walk) from the trailhead.
For a classic Kiwi experience, head to The Waimate Bakery. Housed in a gorgeous historic building, they are famous for their gourmet pies—perfect for a post-hike protein hit. They also have a great selection of sweets and a spacious outdoor area with a playground, making it an ideal final stop if you have kids in tow.
If you’re looking for something a bit more substantial, The Waimate Kitchen & Bar offers a more modern, elegant atmosphere. Their pizzas are a local favourite, and it’s a great spot for a relaxed lunch or a celebratory dinner.
For those who prefer a cold pint and some pub grub, the Royal Tavern is the place to be. It’s a classic bistro-style pub with a garden bar that is perfect for soaking up the last of the afternoon sun while you swap stories about your climb to the White Horse.
No matter which way you choose to end your day, the combination of a brisk walk on the Big Easy and a warm welcome in Waimate makes for a perfect South Canterbury adventure.
