If you’re looking for a way to stretch your legs without leaving the heart of the city, the Bridges Walk in Nelson is an absolute gem. This 3.5km loop is more than just a quick stroll; it’s a journey through the "Sunshine Capital’s" history, nature, and urban charm. Whether you’re a local needing a lunch-break refresh or a visitor wanting to get your bearings, this trail offers a delightful blend of the tranquil Maitai River (Mahitahi) and the vibrant pulse of Nelson’s city centre.
The Bridges Walk is a beautifully curated loop that celebrates Nelson’s relationship with the water. Starting at the Millers Acre Centre (which also serves as the city’s main bus hub), you immediately find yourself on the banks of the Maitai River. The terrain is remarkably gentle—with only about 20 metres of elevation gain—making it an easy and accessible choice for almost everyone. Because the path is largely paved and well-maintained, it is a favourite for parents with buggies and those using wheelchairs.
As you set off, you’ll notice how quickly the urban noise fades, replaced by the rhythmic gurgle of the river and the chatter of local birdlife. The walk leads you along the riverbanks, darting back and forth across the water via a series of historic and modern bridges. One moment you’re under the shade of massive willow trees on Shakespeare Walk, and the next, you’re looking at the contemporary architecture of the city’s surrounding streets.
The experience is one of "urban serenity." You get the best of both worlds: the convenience of being downtown with the peaceful, cooling influence of the river. It’s a loop that doesn't feel like a workout, but rather an exploration. You’ll pass the Riverside Pool, where the smell of chlorine might tempt you for a dip on a hot afternoon, and meander through several green belts that make Nelson feel like a city built within a park.
The "stars" of this walk are, unsurprisingly, the bridges themselves. Each one has a story to tell about Nelson’s development.
Parking is available in central Nelson. The Millers Acre Centre itself has a carpark which was converted to the Nelson Bus Hub. Nearby Nelson City Council carparks include Buxton Square and Bridge Street Car Park, which offer a free first hour of parking, followed by a charge of $2.00 per hour. Parking fees apply Monday to Friday from 8 am to 5 pm and Saturday from 9 am to 1 pm. Maximum time limits apply, so check signage. Free all-day parking is available on the city fringes.

Loop
The Bridges Walk is incredibly easy to find as it begins right in the Nelson CBD. The official starting point is the Millers Acre Centre on Tākaka Way/Halifax Street.
For a city walk, the Bridges Walk is surprisingly rich in birdlife. The Maitai River acts as a natural highway for native species moving between the hills and the coast.
The Bridges Walk is truly a "track for all seasons," but each time of year brings a different flavour:
The Maitai River, or Mahitahi in Māori, has been the lifeblood of this area for centuries. For local Iwi, it was a vital source of food and a pathway for travel. When European settlers arrived, the river became the focal point for the new township of Nelson, which is why you see such a high concentration of historical bridges in such a small area.
The walk also highlights Nelson’s commitment to heritage conservation. As you cross the Nile Street Bridge or the Hardy Street footbridge, you’re walking over structures that have seen the city grow from a colonial outpost to a thriving hub of arts and horticulture. The Queens Gardens, opened in 1892 to celebrate Queen Victoria’s Jubilee, is a classic example of a colonial botanical garden and remains a cherished piece of Nelson’s public land.
One of the best things about an urban trail is that you’re never far from a good flat white or a cold pint. Once you finish your loop back at Millers Acre, you are spoilt for choice:
