If you’re looking for a hike that packs a serious punch of history, geology, and jaw-dropping views into a short distance, the Bridle Path is a Christchurch classic you can’t miss. Linking Heathcote Valley to Lyttelton Harbour, this trail isn't just a workout; it’s a journey back to 1850, following the footsteps of Canterbury’s early European settlers who lugged their entire lives over this ridge to reach their new home.
As you puff your way up, you’re actually walking along the northern rim of the ancient Lyttelton volcano. Keep an eye out for the dramatic Castle Rock and the massive boulders scattered across the slopes—remnants of the volcanic past and more recent reminders of the Canterbury earthquakes.
The track is shared with runners and mountain bikers, so keep an ear out for those coming down fast! While the path is generally solid, it can get a bit "skittery" with loose stones or slippery mud after rain. I’d definitely recommend sturdy boots over your gym sneakers for this one.
From the top, the 360-degree views are simply world-class. To the north, you’ve got the Canterbury Plains, Pegasus Bay, and the Southern Alps shimmering in the distance. Turn around, and you’re looking straight down into the turquoise waters of Lyttelton Harbour and the rugged folds of Banks Peninsula.
Top Tip: Many locals love to do this as a point-to-point adventure. Hike over the top, head down into Lyttelton for a well-deserved flat white at the Lyttelton Coffee Company or a cheeky pint at the Wunderbar, and then catch the Number 28 bus back through the tunnel to Heathcote. If you’ve got the kids with you (or your knees aren't feeling the descent), you can always cheat a little and take the Gondola one way!
Parking is available at several key points. At the Heathcote Valley end, there's a large, free car park at the base of the Christchurch Gondola, located between the Gondola terminal and the Lyttelton tunnel portal. In Lyttelton, you can find parking near the start of Bridle Path Road. Additionally, a visitors' car park is available at the summit, where the Bridle Path meets Summit Road.
