If you are looking for a breath of fresh air without the need for heavy hiking boots or a steep climb, the Foxton to Foxton Beach Connection is the perfect answer. This delightful 2.4-kilometre pathway is more than just a track; it is a scenic bridge between two distinct worlds—the historic, cultural heart of Foxton township and the wild, salty expanse of Foxton Beach.
Whether you are a local looking for your daily dose of exercise or a visitor exploring the hidden gems of the Horowhenua, this trail offers a seamless, accessible way to soak in the region's natural beauty. It is the kind of walk where you can leave the topographical maps at home and simply enjoy the rhythm of your stride or the spin of your wheels.
The Foxton to Foxton Beach Connection is a beautifully maintained, dedicated pedestrian and cycle pathway that runs alongside Foxton Beach Road. Because the terrain is entirely flat (boasting a grand total of 0 metres in elevation gain), it is one of the most inclusive trails in the region. You will find a diverse mix of people here: families pushing strollers, cyclists whirring past, runners hitting their stride, and wheelchair users enjoying the smooth, well-paved surface.
As you set off from the Foxton end, you leave behind the quaint, historic atmosphere of the town. The journey takes about 36 minutes one-way at a leisurely walking pace, but the experience is about much more than just getting from point A to point B. The path is wide and open, offering a sense of freedom under the vast Horowhenua sky.
The "vibe" of the walk changes as you progress. Near the township, you are surrounded by the buzz of the local community and the sight of iconic landmarks like the Dutch windmill. As you move toward the coast, the air begins to change, carrying that unmistakable scent of salt spray and lupins. The trail feels safe and well-separated from the main road, allowing you to relax and take in the surroundings without worrying about traffic. It is a "point-to-point" trail, meaning if you’ve parked at one end, you’ll enjoy a 4.8km round trip—the perfect distance to justify a big lunch afterward!
While the path itself is straightforward, the landmarks at either end and the views in between make it truly special.
Parking is available at both the Foxton and Foxton Beach ends of the connection. In Foxton, parking can be found in the town centre. At Foxton Beach, there is a mix of free and paid parking spaces, including on-street options and designated lots close to beach access points. Early arrival is recommended during peak seasons for prime spots.

Point to point
One of the most striking features is the De Molen windmill in Foxton. This is a full-scale, working replica of a 17th-century Dutch flour mill. Seeing its sails turning against the blue sky is a fantastic photo opportunity and a reminder of the town’s unique cultural heritage.
As you walk, your gaze will inevitably be drawn toward the Manawatū River Estuary. This isn’t just any river mouth; it is an internationally recognised Ramsar wetland. The ecological significance of this area is massive, and even from the pathway, you can appreciate the scale of the wetlands and the intricate network of waterways that support a staggering amount of birdlife.
The trail also acts as a "hub." If you feel like 2.4km isn't enough, it connects seamlessly to other local favourites. You can branch off onto the River Loop Amble or the Flax Walkway in town, or once you reach the beach, continue your journey on the Sunset Walk or the River Mouth Trail. It’s like a "choose your own adventure" for outdoor enthusiasts.
Finding the trail is a breeze, regardless of which end you choose to start from.
Starting in Foxton: Head to the town centre, near the Te Awahou Nieuwe Stroom cultural centre and the windmill. There is plenty of street parking and designated parking lots within the town. From here, you can easily pick up the start of the pathway heading west toward the coast.
Starting at Foxton Beach: If you prefer to start with the sea breeze at your back, head to the beach end. There is a mix of free and paid parking options here, including on-street parking and larger lots near the main beach access points. During the height of summer, this area can get very busy, so arriving a bit earlier in the morning is a smart move to snag a prime spot.
For bird lovers, this trail is a goldmine. Because it skirts the Manawatū River Estuary, you are perfectly positioned to see some of New Zealand’s most interesting avian residents.
Tip: Bring a pair of binoculars if you have them. The best viewing is often a little way off the path toward the water, especially as you approach the beach end of the connection.
The Foxton to Foxton Beach Connection is truly a year-round destination, but each season brings a different flavour:
This area is steeped in history. For Māori, the Manawatū River and its estuary have been a vital source of mahinga kai (food gathering) and a key transport route for centuries. The town itself is known as Te Awahou, and the cultural centre of the same name is well worth a visit to learn about the local iwi (Ngāti Raukawa) and their connection to this land.
In the 19th century, Foxton became a thriving port and the centre of the New Zealand flax (harakeke) industry. As you walk the connection, you are traversing a landscape that has transformed from a busy industrial hub to a protected ecological haven and a peaceful recreational corridor. The Ramsar status of the estuary highlights just how important this "backyard" is on a global scale.
Once you’ve completed your walk, you are spoiled for choice when it comes to "refuelling."
If you finish at the Foxton Beach end, the Ocean Beach Eatery is a fantastic choice. It’s about 1.5km from the trail end and offers a relaxed seaside vibe. Their woodfired pizzas are legendary, and there’s plenty of outdoor seating to enjoy the coastal air while you eat.
If you’re back in the Foxton township, you can’t miss Café De Molen. Situated right next to the windmill, it’s the place to go for authentic Dutch treats and great coffee. Plus, your patronage helps support the maintenance of the windmill!
For a more substantial meal, the Foxton Bar and Eatery offers a great Asian-Kiwi fusion menu, while the Manawatu Hotel provides that classic, welcoming Kiwi pub experience—perfect for a cold drink and a chat with the locals after a successful outing.
The Foxton to Foxton Beach Connection might be short and flat, but it packs a lot of heart, history, and natural beauty into its 2.4 kilometres. It’s a brilliant reminder that sometimes the best adventures are the ones right on our doorstep.
