If you’re looking for the ultimate Christchurch coastal stomp, the Awaroa/Godley Head Loop Track is hard to beat. This is the kind of walk that makes you feel incredibly lucky to live in or visit Waitaha Canterbury. It’s a quintessential local favourite that serves up a perfect cocktail of dramatic cliffside views, unique Kiwi history, and a decent bit of exercise to earn your post-hike coffee.
As you begin to climb, the path hugs the 120-metre-high cliffs. The views here are nothing short of spectacular—you’ll look across the vast Pacific Ocean, out toward Pegasus Bay, and on those crisp, clear days, the snow-capped Kaikōura Ranges appear like magic on the horizon.
The terrain is mostly well-formed gravel, but don't let that fool you—there are a few "thigh-warming" sections as you gain those 300 metres of elevation. Because the headland is quite exposed, you’ll likely feel the famous Canterbury easterly breeze, so a windbreaker is usually a good shout.
Keep an eye out for Scott’s Cabin too—a historic hut originally intended for Captain Robert Scott’s Antarctic expeditions. It’s a poignant reminder of Christchurch’s long-standing connection to the icy continent.
The primary starting point for the Godley Head Loop Track is the large, sealed car park at Taylors Mistake Beach. This car park is well-equipped with toilets and designated spaces that can accommodate longer vehicles, making it ideal for campervans. Due to its popularity, especially on summer weekends, arriving early is recommended to secure a spot. Overnight stays are generally not permitted at the beach car park. Alternatively, parking is also available at the Godley Head car park, accessible via the narrow but sealed Summit Road. Toilets are available at both the Taylors Mistake and Godley Head car parks.

Loop
Parking: Most people start at the Taylors Mistake car park. It’s large and has toilets, but it fills up fast on sunny weekends—aim to get there early! If it’s packed, you can also drive up to the Godley Head car park via Summit Road.
Dogs: Your four-legged friends are welcome on a leash, as there is often sheep grazing nearby. Just a heads-up: dogs aren't allowed on Taylors Mistake Beach during the summer months, so check the local signage.
After the Walk: Once you’ve finished the loop, head over the hill to Sumner. Grabbing a flat white at Coffee Culture or a bite at The Shroom Room is the traditional way to cap off a Godley Head adventure.
Pack your sunblock, a sturdy pair of shoes, and your camera—this is one Canterbury walk you won’t want to miss!
