If you’re looking for a walk that packs an incredible punch of scenery without requiring an entire day of trekking, the Golden Rapids – Silica Rapids loop is a must-add to your Tongariro itinerary. Nestled right in the heart of the Whakapapa Village area, this trail is a masterclass in New Zealand’s volcanic diversity. In just a few hours, you’ll transition from lush, mossy beech forests to alpine bogs, over ancient lava flows, and past some of the most oddly coloured water you’ll ever see.
Whether you’re a local looking for a weekend stretch of the legs or a tourist wanting a taste of the park’s volcanic magic beyond the famous Crossing, this 7km loop is a fantastic choice. It’s well-maintained, incredibly varied, and offers a bit of everything that makes the Central Plateau so special.
As you wander, the soothing soundtrack of the Whakapapanui Stream keeps you company. The track meanders alongside the water, offering several spots to peer down into the crystal-clear flow. Before long, you’ll reach the Golden Rapids. It’s a surreal sight—the riverbed looks as though it’s been dusted with gold. Don’t get too excited about early retirement, though; the shimmer comes from iron oxide clays leached from nearby swamps, a quirky geological calling card of this volcanic region.
After leaving the golden waters behind, the trail begins a gentle but steady 200m climb. This is where the landscape really starts to change. The dense canopy thins out, opening up into expansive, swampy alpine flats. To protect the fragile environment, you’ll spend a good portion of this section walking on sturdy boardwalks. These elevated paths take you right over red tussock, wire rush, and tangle fern. It’s a very open, airy section of the walk that provides a sense of the sheer scale of the National Park.
The final "act" of the trail brings you to the Silica Rapids themselves. After a bit of a climb, you’ll find yourself looking at what looks like a white, frozen waterfall. It’s actually a series of terraces formed by aluminium and silicate minerals. The contrast between the creamy-white rocks and the surrounding alpine greenery is stunning.
Parking is available at a small car park at the start of the Silica Rapids Track, located at the upper south end of Whakapapa Holiday Park, just off State Highway 48 (Bruce Road) through Whakapapa Village. This trailhead is approximately 250 metres above the Tongariro National Park Visitor Centre. Whakapapa Village also offers various parking areas, though some may have time limits during the winter season.

Loop
The loop eventually leads you out onto a tussock-covered lava flow before connecting with Bruce Road. You’ll walk the final stretch back down the road into Whakapapa Village. While road walking isn't always a highlight, the views of Mount Ruapehu and Mount Ngauruhoe from this vantage point are hard to beat on a clear day. Because the track is so well-graded and features plenty of boardwalks, it’s a great option for kids, though the 2.5-hour duration means they’ll need a bit of stamina.
The main car park for the Silica Rapids Track is located at the upper south end of the Whakapapa Holiday Park, just off Bruce Road. It’s a small car park, so in peak summer or winter weekends, it can fill up fast. If it’s full, you can park in the main Whakapapa Village parking areas (near the Visitor Centre) and walk the extra 250 metres up the road to the trailhead. Just be aware that during the ski season, some village parking has time limits, so check the signs!
When you look at the Silica Rapids, you aren't just looking at a pretty view—you’re looking at the living history of the land. The terraces are a result of the complex volcanic chemistry that has been bubbling away beneath the surface for thousands of years. The area is a UNESCO World Heritage site for both its natural and cultural values, making every step on this trail part of a much larger story of connection between the Māori people and their ancestral mountains (maunga).
The Golden Rapids – Silica Rapids loop is more than just a walk; it’s a concentrated dose of everything that makes Tongariro National Park iconic. From the golden streams to the white terraces, it’s a journey through a landscape that feels truly alive.
