If you are looking for a slice of classic New Zealand rural charm without the heart-pumping vertical climbs of the backcountry, the Halcombe to Feilding Cycleway is calling your name. Spanning a gentle 12.5 kilometres through the rolling heart of the Manawatū, this route is less about conquering mountains and more about soaking in the "big sky" country that defines our agricultural heritage.
Whether you are a local looking for a Sunday stretch of the legs or a visitor wanting to see the "real" New Zealand beyond the tourist hotspots, this point-to-point trail offers a peaceful, scenic, and thoroughly accessible adventure.
The journey begins in the quiet, historic village of Halcombe. Once a bustling railway junction in the late 19th century, Halcombe today retains a sleepy, settled atmosphere that makes for a perfect starting block. As you set off, you’ll immediately feel the pace of life slow down. The trail primarily utilises existing country roads, which means you’ll be walking or cycling on a mix of tarseal and firm surfaces. While it is identified as a future dedicated route in the Manawatū District Council’s strategy, the current experience is one of authentic rural road-tripping.
The terrain is delightfully easy. With a total elevation gain of just 75 metres spread across more than 12 kilometres, "gentle undulations" is the name of the game. You aren’t here for the burn; you’re here for the views. As you leave the village behind, the landscape opens up into a tapestry of lush green paddocks. Depending on the time of year, you’ll be flanked by curious sheep, grazing cattle, or perhaps a few frolicking lambs in the springtime.
There is a distinct sense of solitude here. Away from the main highways, the sound of traffic is replaced by the rustle of macrocarpa windbreaks and the distant call of farm life. The road meanders with the lay of the land, offering expansive vistas of the Manawatū plains. On a clear day, the horizon is dominated by the majestic Ruahine and Tararua Ranges, their peaks often dusted with snow in the cooler months.
As you approach the outskirts of Feilding, the rural quietude begins to transition. The paddocks give way to lifestyle blocks and eventually the charming suburban fringes of what has been voted "New Zealand’s Most Beautiful Town" no fewer than 16 times. The final stretch brings you into the heart of a town that feels like a step back in time, with its Edwardian architecture and friendly, bustling atmosphere.
Parking is available in the village of Halcombe, typically on street or at local community facilities. In Feilding, ample parking can be found in the town centre around Manchester Square and at various public car parks.

Point to point
While the entire route is a scenic delight, there are a few standout features you should keep your camera ready for:
The route is a point-to-point journey, meaning you’ll start in Halcombe and end in Feilding (or vice versa).
Because it is a point-to-point trail, many people choose to "car-shuffle" with a friend, leaving one vehicle at each end. If you’re feeling fit, the 25km return trip is a fantastic weekend challenge!
The Manawatū countryside is a haven for both native and introduced birdlife. As you move between the scattered pockets of trees and farm windbreaks, keep your eyes and ears open.
Top Tip: The best time for birdwatching is early morning or late afternoon when the air is cooler and the birds are most active. Bring a small pair of binoculars if you have them!
The Halcombe to Feilding Cycleway is truly a year-round trail, but each season brings its own flavour:
The Manawatū region is steeped in history. For Māori, the plains were a source of incredible resources, and the nearby rivers were vital transport links. In the colonial era, the development of the railway transformed the region into a powerhouse of New Zealand’s wool and dairy industry.
The trail itself is a bridge between two worlds: Halcombe, named after Arthur Halcombe (an agent for the Emigrants and Colonists’ Aid Corporation), and Feilding, named after Colonel William Feilding. This area was part of the "Manchester Block," a massive settlement project in the 1870s. As you walk, you are literally retracing the paths laid down by those early settlers who carved these farms out of what was once dense bush.
One of the best parts of this trail is the "refuel" at either end. Both Halcombe and Feilding punch well above their weight when it comes to hospitality.
Whether you're walking with the kids, taking the dog for a long scenic stroll, or cycling with friends, the Halcombe to Feilding Cycleway is a wonderful way to experience the quiet beauty of rural New Zealand. It’s easy, it’s beautiful, and it finishes in one of the loveliest towns in the country. What more could you want?
