If you’ve ever admired the iconic blue-grey basalt stone of the Canterbury Museum or Christchurch’s historic city buildings, you’ve already seen a piece of Halswell Quarry. Once a bustling industrial site that operated for over 130 years, this 60-hectare park has been masterfully transformed into one of Christchurch’s most diverse and beloved community spaces. Whether you’re a local looking for a quick leg-stretcher or a visitor wanting a panoramic introduction to the Garden City, the Quarry Rim Track is a must-do.
The path is mostly well-maintained gravel, making it a favourite for families and casual walkers. However, keep an eye out for some of the steeper sections which can get a bit rocky or slippery after a typical Christchurch drizzle. As you reach the rim, the industrial history of the park comes alive through interpretive panels that tell the story of the men and machinery that shaped this landscape from the 1860s until 1990.
Beyond the views, the park is home to the unique Sister City Gardens. These botanical collections represent Christchurch’s international connections, offering a peaceful spot to wander through different "corners of the world." If you’re a bird lover, keep your ears open; the park is a sanctuary for native Tūī, Kererū (wood pigeon), and Piwakawaka (fantail), along with Pukeko and Canada Geese near the tranquil wetland areas.
* Parking: There’s plenty of free parking across three on-site car parks. The main one is about 1km down Kennedys Bush Road and has toilet facilities. * Dogs: It’s a pup’s paradise! There is a dedicated off-leash exercise area, though they need to be back on the lead for the main tracks. * Extend your walk: If 2km isn't enough, the park connects to the Kennedys Bush Track for those wanting to head higher into the Port Hills.
Free parking is available in three car parks on site at Halswell Quarry Park. The main car park entrance is located approximately 1 km along Kennedys Bush Road. Toilets are also available at the main car park.
