Imagine standing on a rugged sandstone ridgeline, the crisp morning air carrying the scent of damp earth and native pine as you gaze out over a sea of green, rolling hills. This is the reality of the Haurata High Country Walks, a spectacular network of private trails tucked away on a working high country station in the Gisborne backcountry. Whether you are looking for a challenging day hike or a relaxed multi-day escape, this hidden gem offers a rare opportunity to experience the raw beauty of New Zealand’s rural heartland.
The jewel in the crown of this trail network is a magnificent 15-kilometre loop that takes around 8 hours to complete. With an elevation gain of 450 metres, the walk is graded as moderate, making it a highly rewarding challenge for anyone with a reasonable level of fitness.
Your journey begins at approximately 300 metres above sea level and climbs to just under 1,000 metres. The terrain underfoot is wonderfully varied, transitioning from wide, established farm roads and historic cattle routes to narrow, purpose-built walking tracks. Some of the steeper sections require a bit of careful footwork and a healthy sense of adventure, particularly where the track narrows along the ridgelines. However, any physical exertion is quickly forgotten as the trail opens up to reveal expansive, 360-degree views of the rugged East Coast backcountry.
What makes this walk truly special is its versatility. While the full loop is a hearty day's tramp, the trail network is designed so you can tailor the distance to suit your group. It is incredibly kid-friendly for active families who want to tackle shorter sections, and because the trails are dog-friendly, your favourite four-legged hiking buddy can join you on leash to explore the wide-open spaces.
The Haurata High Country Walks are packed with natural and historical wonders that will have you reaching for your camera at every turn. Here are the absolute must-see highlights along the trail:

Loop
The trailhead is located at the Haurata High Country Retreat, situated at 1257 Makaretu Road, Matawai.
To get there from Gisborne, take State Highway 2 north towards Opotiki. Once you reach the quiet rural settlement of Matawai, turn onto Motu Road, and then follow the signs onto Makaretu Road. The drive from Gisborne takes about an hour and fifteen minutes, winding through some lovely rural scenery.
Ample parking is available for walkers and overnight guests at the retreat. Because the walks are located on a private working station, it is highly recommended to contact the hosts at Haurata ahead of time to arrange access and get the latest track updates.
The preservation of native forest on the station has created a thriving haven for birdlife. As you walk, you will be accompanied by a rich soundtrack of birdsong. Keep your eyes and ears open for these native species:
The Haurata High Country Walks are open and beautiful in Spring, Summer, Autumn, and Winter, with each season painting the landscape in a completely different light.
The land around Haurata is steeped in rich cultural heritage. This area was historically a key travel route and stronghold for local Māori. Throughout the walks, you will pass ancient pā sites (fortified villages) and strategic observation points that offer a glimpse into the pre-European history of the region.
Most notably, the area overlooks the site of the siege of Ngatapa, where the legendary Ringatū leader Te Kooti made a dramatic stand against government forces in January 1869. Walking these ridges today, it is easy to see why this rugged, vertical landscape was chosen for its defensive vantage points.
In addition to its cultural history, Haurata represents the best of modern New Zealand conservation. The landowners have actively covenanted large portions of their property under the QEII National Trust, ensuring that these pockets of virgin native bush are protected from development and grazing forever, allowing the native biodiversity of the Gisborne region to recover and thrive.
After spending 8 hours conquering the hills, you will have worked up a massive appetite.
For a classic, no-nonsense Kiwi treat, head back to the Matawai Store. It is the perfect place to grab a hot, flaky meat pie, a cold drink, or a double-scoop ice cream cone to celebrate your achievements.
If you are craving a hearty pub meal and a warm fire, make a stop at the historic Matawai Hotel. This welcoming country pub is a favourite with locals and travellers alike, offering cold beer on tap, generous portions of pub classics, and plenty of local character. It is the perfect spot to rest your legs, chat with the locals, and reflect on an unforgettable day in the Gisborne high country.
