If you find yourself in the heart of Southland, just a stone's throw from the bustling town of Gore, there is a hidden pocket of wilderness waiting to be explored. While Gore is world-famous for its brown trout fishing and country music, the nearby Hokonui Hills offer a different kind of magic. The Hokonui Water Race Trail is a standout experience, offering a perfect blend of pioneering history, lush native forest, and some of the best views in the region.
At 7.8km return, this trail is an "out and back" journey that takes roughly 2.5 hours to complete. It’s a track that feels a world away from the everyday, yet it’s only a five-minute drive from the centre of town. Whether you are a local looking for a weekend leg-stretcher or a visitor wanting to see the "real" Southland, this trail delivers.
The terrain itself is rated as moderate. While mountain bikers often find this a relatively easy, flowing ride, hikers should be prepared for a bit more of a challenge. Underfoot, you will encounter a mix of dirt paths, tangled tree roots, and the occasional rocky outcrop. This isn't a manicured gravel path; it’s a proper forest trail that requires a bit of footwork. If it has been raining recently—which is quite common in the deep south—expect things to get a little "mucky." The mud can be slippery, particularly on the steeper sections, so a pair of sturdy boots is highly recommended.
The trail follows the path of an old water race, which means you’ll notice a gentle but consistent gradient as you climb. As you ascend through the bush, the forest occasionally thins out, offering "peek-a-boo" views of the surrounding landscape. The real reward, however, comes as you reach the higher points of the track. The canopy opens up to reveal a spectacular panorama of the Southland Plains. On a clear day, the view stretches all the way to the iconic Bluff Hill and the distant, rugged peaks of Rakiura (Stewart Island) shimmering on the horizon.
Parking is available at multiple access points. The closest parking and trailhead is at the end of Pope Road. Additional parking is available at Domain Road and Dolamore Park.

Out and back
This is a kid-friendly walk for those with active youngsters who don't mind a bit of a climb. However, please note that this is a no-dog zone to protect the sensitive local wildlife.
For the photographers and view-seekers, the scenic vistas are the undeniable highlight. While many forest walks keep you enclosed in the trees, the Hokonui Water Race Trail provides those essential "wow" moments where the forest gives way to the vastness of the Southland landscape. The contrast between the dark green of the Hokonui Hills and the bright, patchwork greens of the rolling farmland below is simply stunning.
If you are coming from Gore, simply head west toward the hills; it’s a short, scenic five-minute drive. If the Pope Road area is busy, or if you fancy a longer day of exploring, there are alternative entry points at Domain Road and the main Dolamore Park entrance. Dolamore Park is a fantastic hub with playgrounds and picnic areas, making it a great base if you are travelling with family.
Tip: For the best birdwatching, try to start your walk in the early morning when the "dawn chorus" is at its peak and the birds are most active.
Environmentally, the Croydon Bush Scenic Reserve is a precious remnant of the podocarp forest that once covered much of this region. Local conservation efforts are ongoing to ensure that the native bird populations thrive, making this area a vital ecological link in the Southland landscape.
For a relaxed, family-friendly vibe, head to Howl at the Moon. It’s only about 4.5km from the trailhead and offers a fantastic range of "pub grub" with a modern twist. Their baked salmon or satay soba noodles are just what you need to refuel.
If you’re after something a bit more sophisticated, The Thomas Green Public House & Dining Room in the centre of Gore is a must-visit. With its grand architecture and open fireplaces, it’s the perfect place to warm up in winter with a local craft beer and a hearty meal made from Southland produce.
Finally, if you just want a classic Kiwi pub experience to swap stories about the trail, Traffers offers a laid-back environment with an outdoor area—ideal for a quick drink and some bar snacks before you head home.
