If you find yourself cruising through South Canterbury, it is easy to let the road carry you straight through the rolling countryside. But for those in the know, a quick turn towards the charming town of Waimate reveals one of the region’s best-kept secrets. Knottingley Park and Arboretum is what locals affectionately call a "hidden jewel," and once you step under the canopy of its towering giants, you’ll understand why.
Spanning 36 hectares of lush, tranquil parkland, this isn’t just a patch of grass with a few trees; it is a living museum of botanical history. Located just 2km from the Waimate town centre, the park offers a sanctuary that feels miles away from the hustle of everyday life. Whether you are a local looking for a morning jog or a tourist seeking a peaceful break on a long road trip, the Knottingley Park Loop is an absolute must-do.
The beauty of the Knottingley Park Loop lies in its accessibility and its atmosphere. This is an easy 2.5km loop that takes about 30 minutes to complete at a leisurely pace, though you’ll likely want to linger longer to soak in the surroundings. With an elevation gain of only 20 metres, the track is almost entirely flat, making it a dream for everyone from serious runners to families with toddlers in prams.
As you set off from the entrance, the first thing you’ll notice is the scale. You are walking amongst more than 3,000 diverse trees, many of which are over a century old. The terrain is well-maintained and wide, easily accommodating walkers, runners, and even those on e-bikes. The trail meanders through the heart of the arboretum, where the air feels noticeably cooler and fresher beneath the dense exotic foliage.
There is a profound sense of stillness here. Unlike many coastal or mountain tracks in New Zealand that offer rugged, windswept views, Knottingley Park offers a "cathedral of green." The path takes you past the historic cricket grounds—a quintessential slice of Kiwiana—where on a summer afternoon, you might even catch the sound of leather on willow. Because it is a loop, the navigation is effortless, allowing you to switch off your brain and simply enjoy the rhythmic crunch of gravel or the soft carpet of leaves beneath your feet.
Parking is available at the park entrance off Waihao Back Road, near the camping ground facilities. The entrance is also at the corner of Horgans Road and Waihao Back Road.

Knottingley Park is steeped in layers of history and natural wonder. Here are the features you shouldn't miss:
Getting to Knottingley Park is straightforward. If you are in Waimate, head south for about 2km. The main entrance is located at the corner of Horgans Road and Waihao Back Road.
There is ample parking available at the park entrance off Waihao Back Road, conveniently located near the camping ground facilities. If you are travelling in a campervan, the access is easy, and there is plenty of room to manoeuvre. The park is well-signposted from the main town centre, so you won't have any trouble finding your way to this peaceful retreat.
While the trees are the stars of the show, the park is also a haven for birdlife. The combination of old exotic trees and nearby native pockets creates a perfect habitat for several iconic New Zealand species.
Tip: For the best wildlife experience, try to visit in the early morning or late afternoon when the birds are most vocal and active. The low light filtering through the massive trees also makes for incredible photography during these times.
Knottingley Park is a true four-season destination, with each time of year offering a different "vibe."
The land that Knottingley Park sits on is deeply tied to the colonial heritage of Waimate. The Studholme family, who were the first European settlers in the area, played a pivotal role in establishing the town and this park. The transition of this land from native bush to a structured, English-style arboretum reflects the history of the 19th-century settlers who sought to bring a piece of their "home" to New Zealand.
However, the park also honours its roots through the replica 1864 bush hut, acknowledging the timber milling history that once defined Waimate. Today, the park is a community hub, hosting events and serving as a home for the local cricket club, ensuring that the history of the land continues to be written by the people who use it today.
Once you’ve finished your loop and perhaps enjoyed a picnic under the trees, you’ll likely be looking for a spot to refuel. Waimate has some fantastic options just a 2-minute drive away:
Whether you are staying at the on-site camping ground or just passing through for the hour, Knottingley Park offers a slice of peace and history that stays with you long after you’ve left the gates.
