If you are looking for a quintessential North Canterbury escape that combines rural charm with a rugged coastline, the Kowhai River Walk in Leithfield is a hidden gem waiting to be discovered. Located just a short 40-minute drive north of Christchurch, this easy-going trail is a local favourite for a reason. It offers a little bit of everything: historic village vibes, tranquil farmland, a meandering braided river, and the wild beauty of the Pacific Ocean.
At just 5km and almost entirely flat, this is the kind of walk where the focus isn't on the physical grind, but on soaking up the atmosphere. It’s a perfect Sunday morning excursion for families, dog walkers, and anyone looking to reconnect with nature without needing to pack a heavy tramping pack.
The journey begins on the edge of the historic Leithfield village, a settlement that feels like a step back in time. As you set off near the Kowai River Bridge, the trail immediately introduces you to the unique geography of the Hurunui District. To one side, you’ll see the patchwork of North Canterbury farmland—lush green paddocks often dotted with sheep or cattle. To the other, the Kowhai River (also spelled Kowai locally) stretches out in its classic braided form, a hallmark of the Canterbury plains.
The terrain is a gentle mix of well-trodden sandy tracks and grassy paths. As you head towards the coast, you’ll meander through patches of regenerating native bush and small stands of pine forest. One of the most heart-warming aspects of this walk is seeing the handiwork of the local community. Enthusiastic volunteers have been working hard to restore the natural environment here, planting native species to encourage birdlife and stabilize the riverbanks.
As you progress, the scenery begins to shift. The river starts to wide out into a captivating coastal lagoon. This area is a haven for water birds and provides a stark, beautiful contrast to the inland sections of the track. You’ll notice the air changing, too—the earthy scent of the pine needles and river silt is gradually replaced by the crisp, salty tang of the sea.
The soundscape changes alongside the scenery. The gentle rustle of wind through the trees is eventually overtaken by the distant, rhythmic roar of the waves crashing onto Leithfield Beach. The final stretch of the trail takes you onto the beach spit, where the river finally meets the sea. Here, the landscape opens up spectacularly. You can walk along the firm, dark sands of the beach, watching surfers brave the swells or simply marvelling at the vastness of the horizon.
Parking is available beside the Kowai River Bridge in Leithfield, which is a common starting point for the walk. Alternatively, you can park at the Leithfield Beach car park, located at the coastal end of the trail.

Loop
The loop can be completed by returning the same way, or for a change of pace, you can walk back to the village via the scenic coastal roads that service the Leithfield Beach community. While the track is generally wide and easy, those with pushchairs or strollers should be aware that the sections closest to the beach can become a bit bumpy and sandy, so a sturdy "all-terrain" buggy is recommended.
The Kowhai River Walk may be short, but it punches well above its weight in terms of highlights.
Leithfield is easily accessible from State Highway 1. If you are driving from Christchurch, head north past Woodend and Pegasus. As you enter the Hurunui District, look for the signs for Leithfield.
There are two primary places to park: 1. Kowai River Bridge (Village Side): This is the most common starting point. There is plenty of space to park beside the bridge on the edge of the village. This allows you to walk the full length of the river down to the sea. 2. Leithfield Beach Car Park: If you prefer to start with the ocean and work your way inland, you can drive through to the end of Leithfield Beach Road and park at the coastal car park. This is also a great spot if you only want to do a shorter portion of the walk near the lagoon.
The mix of riverbed, forest, and coastal estuary makes this a fantastic spot for birdwatching. The Hurunui region is known for its biodiversity, and the Kowhai River Walk is no exception.
If you are lucky or visiting during the spring and summer months, keep a lookout for the Banded Dotterel. These small, well-camouflaged birds nest in the gravel of the riverbeds. Because they nest on the ground, it is incredibly important to keep dogs on a lead in sensitive areas to protect the chicks and eggs.
The Kowhai River Walk is truly a year-round destination, with each season offering a different perspective on the landscape.
Leithfield is one of the oldest settlements in the Hurunui District, established in the mid-19th century. The town grew around the colonial coach routes, and the Old Leithfield Hotel remains a standing monument to that era.
The river itself, the Kowai, holds significance as a traditional mahinga kai (food gathering) area for Waitaha and Ngāi Tahu. Braided rivers are rare globally, and in New Zealand, they are ecological hotspots. The interaction between the shingle, the flowing water, and the surrounding scrub creates a unique habitat that locals are fiercely protective of. By walking here, you are stepping into a landscape that has been a lifeline for both Māori and early European settlers for centuries.
No North Canterbury walk is complete without a bit of "après-hike" refreshment. Leithfield has two fantastic options that cater perfectly to walkers.
Whether you’re a local looking for a new weekend routine or a tourist exploring the North Canterbury coastline, the Kowhai River Walk offers a peaceful, refreshing experience that showcases the very best of Leithfield’s natural beauty.
