If you are looking for a breath of fresh air and a chance to stretch your legs without having to tackle a steep mountain range, the Lincoln to Rolleston Shared Path is a local gem waiting to be discovered. Located in the heart of the Selwyn District, just a short drive from Christchurch, this trail offers a quintessential Canterbury experience: big skies, flat horizons, and a wonderful sense of community connection.
Whether you are a local resident using the path for your morning commute or a visitor wanting to see the "real" rural-meets-urban landscape of New Zealand, this 9-kilometre path provides a safe, accessible, and thoroughly enjoyable outing. It is a testament to the region's commitment to active transport, making it just as popular for cyclists and runners as it is for those enjoying a leisurely weekend stroll with the dog and the kids.
The beauty of the Lincoln to Rolleston Shared Path lies in its simplicity. Spanning 9 kilometres from point to point, the trail is almost entirely flat, with a negligible elevation gain of just 20 metres. This makes it an "easy" grade walk, perfect for those days when you want to move your body without the knee-straining descent of a typical alpine hike.
As you set off from either Lincoln or Rolleston, you’ll find yourself on a wide, well-maintained surface that alternates between sealed sections and high-quality gravel. The path has been designed with safety in mind, utilizing generous road shoulders and dedicated off-road sections that keep you tucked away from the main flow of traffic. This makes it an ideal spot for parents teaching young ones how to ride a bike or for those walking a dog on a lead.
The journey takes about two hours at a steady walking pace. Along the way, the scenery is a peaceful blend of Selwyn’s agricultural heritage and its modern, fast-growing townships. To one side, you’ll often see wide-open paddocks where sheep or cattle graze against the backdrop of the distant Southern Alps. To the other, you’ll see the developing urban fringes, giving you a front-row seat to the growth of two of New Zealand’s most vibrant rural hubs.
Because the path is so straight and open, there is a real sense of space here. You won't find yourself lost in dense bush; instead, you get to enjoy the "big sky" country that the Canterbury Plains are famous for. It’s the kind of walk where you can clear your head, watch the clouds roll by, and feel the gentle rhythm of the rural landscape.
Parking is available at either end of the shared path in the town centres of Lincoln and Rolleston. In Rolleston, various timed parking options (10, 30, 120, and 180 minutes) are available on Christensen Way, Rōhutu Way, Markham Way, and Tennyson Street. For all-day parking, a large unrestricted car park is located north of the Rolleston Community Centre. In Lincoln, general car parking facilities can be found throughout the town centre, including designated car parks and on-street parking options.

Point to point
While this trail doesn't feature a hidden waterfall or a massive summit, it has its own unique set of charms that make it a local favourite.
Accessing the Lincoln to Rolleston Shared Path is straightforward, as it begins and ends near the town centres of both Lincoln and Rolleston.
Starting in Rolleston: If you are beginning your journey in Rolleston, you are spoilt for choice when it comes to parking. For those planning a quick burst of exercise, there are timed parking options (10, 30, 120, and 180 minutes) available on Christensen Way, Rōhutu Way, Markham Way, and Tennyson Street. However, since the walk takes about two hours one way (and four if you’re doing the return trip!), we recommend the large unrestricted car park located north of the Rolleston Community Centre. It’s the perfect place to leave the car for the day without keeping an eye on the clock.
Starting in Lincoln: In Lincoln, general car parking is available throughout the town centre. You can find designated public car parks as well as plenty of on-street parking options near the main shops. The path is easily accessible from the heart of the village, allowing you to grab a coffee before you head out.
The Canterbury Plains are a hive of activity for local birdlife, particularly those species that have adapted well to the agricultural and garden environments of the Selwyn District. As you walk, keep your ears open for the melodic song of the riroriro (Grey Warbler). These tiny birds are more often heard than seen, but they are common year-round along the hedgerows.
The most frequent companion on your walk will likely be the pīwakawaka (Fantail). These friendly little birds are known for their aerobatic flying style as they hunt for insects kicked up by your footsteps. Don’t be surprised if one follows you for a few hundred metres!
Keep an eye on the sky as well. The kāhu (Swamp Harrier) is an occasional but impressive sight in this area. You’ll often see them soaring high above the paddocks on thermal currents, looking for their next meal. In the more established garden areas near the townships, you might also spot the Kererū (New Zealand Pigeon) perched in a tree or hear the heavy "whoosh-whoosh" of their wings as they fly overhead.
The Lincoln to Rolleston Shared Path is a true all-seasons trail, but each time of year brings its own flavour.
The Nor'west Factor: One thing every local knows about the Canterbury Plains is the "Nor'wester." This warm, strong wind can blow across the plains with significant force. Before you head out, check the weather forecast. If a strong North-Westerly is blowing, you might find the 9km stretch a bit more of a workout than you bargained for, especially if you are heading toward Rolleston!
The Selwyn District is one of the fastest-growing areas in New Zealand, but its roots are deeply embedded in the land. This path is more than just a convenience; it represents the evolution of the region. Historically, this land was part of the vast network of pathways used by Ngāi Tahu, the iwi (tribe) of this region, as they moved between the coast and the inland resources of the plains and mountains.
In more recent colonial history, the area became the backbone of Canterbury’s farming industry. Lincoln itself is famous for Lincoln University, New Zealand’s specialist land-based university, which has been at the forefront of agricultural research since 1878.
The development of this shared path was a collaborative effort, funded by the Urban Cycleways Fund and the Selwyn District Council. It was designed to bridge the gap between the two towns, encouraging "active transport"—the idea that we can move between our communities using our own power rather than relying solely on cars. By walking this path, you are participating in a modern piece of Selwyn’s story.
One of the best things about a point-to-point walk between two vibrant towns is the reward waiting for you at the finish line. Whether you end in Lincoln or Rolleston, you have some fantastic options for a post-hike "refuel."
The Lincoln to Rolleston Shared Path might be "easy" by technical standards, but the sense of connection, the fresh air, and the hospitality at either end make it a truly high-quality experience. Lace up your shoes and enjoy the best of the Selwyn District!
