If you are looking for a break from the rugged, muddy bush tracks but still want to stretch your legs and soak in some quintessential New Zealand charm, then a visit to Feilding is an absolute must. Known affectionately as "Friendly Feilding," this town has won the title of New Zealand’s Most Beautiful Town no fewer than 16 times, and it’s not hard to see why. The Manchester-Warwick Street Path is a delightful 2km loop that serves as the perfect introduction to this Edwardian gem.
This isn't your typical wilderness hike; instead, it is a sophisticated urban stroll that blends history, community, and beautifully manicured streetscapes. Whether you are a local resident popping out for some fresh air or a tourist looking to experience the heart of the Manawatū, this easy, flat walk offers a relaxed way to explore the town's vibrant centre.
Stepping onto the Manchester-Warwick Street Path feels like stepping back into a more refined era. The loop begins and ends in the heart of the town, guiding you through wide, clean streets lined with some of the best-preserved Edwardian architecture in the Southern Hemisphere. Because the entire route is paved and features a negligible elevation gain of just 10 metres, it is incredibly accessible.
As you start your walk, perhaps beginning at the iconic Manchester Square, you’ll immediately feel the community spirit. The terrain is smooth and wide, making it a dream for parents pushing prams or those who might find uneven forest roots a bit of a challenge. If you are bringing the kids along, they will love the space to roam, and the path is equally welcoming for your four-legged friends on a lead.
The walk takes about 30 minutes at a brisk pace, but we highly recommend slowing down. The real magic of this trail lies in the details—the hanging flower baskets that bloom with colour, the intricate facades of the historic buildings, and the friendly "hello" you’re likely to receive from locals passing by. You’ll meander along Manchester Street, where boutique shops and local businesses hum with activity, before turning onto Warwick Street. The transition between these two main arteries gives you a comprehensive look at the town’s layout, connecting the bustling commercial hub with the quieter, scenic edges of the CBD.
Free parking is available throughout Feilding's CBD, including on-street parking along Manchester and Warwick Streets. Time limits are enforced from 8:30 AM to 3:00 PM, Monday to Friday. For longer stays, visitors can utilise Council-owned off-street car parks located on Eyre Street (behind Delish and Murrays) and Warwick Street, all within a 500-metre walk of Manchester Square.

Loop
The undeniable crown jewel of this walk is the Feilding Clock Tower located in Manchester Square. This majestic structure is the focal point of the town and serves as a fantastic landmark to orient yourself. It’s also one of the most photographed spots in the region, so make sure your phone is charged!
Finding your way to the start of the Manchester-Warwick Street Path is incredibly straightforward. Feilding is located about 15-20 minutes north of Palmerston North. Once you arrive in town, head straight for the town centre—you can't miss the Clock Tower in Manchester Square.
Parking Information: Feilding is very visitor-friendly when it comes to parking. You can find free on-street parking all along Manchester and Warwick Streets. Do keep an eye on the signs, though; time limits (usually 30, 60, or 120 minutes) are enforced from 8:30 AM to 3:00 PM, Monday to Friday.
While you won't find the elusive Kiwi or a Kea in downtown Feilding, the town’s lush gardens and mature trees provide a sanctuary for many of our feathered friends. As you walk, listen for the distinctive song of the Tūī, who are occasional visitors to the flowering gums and native shrubs planted around the CBD.
The beauty of an urban path like this is that it truly is a trail for all seasons.
Feilding is more than just a pretty face; it is the beating heart of the Manawatū’s agricultural sector. The town was established in the 1870s and named after Colonel William Feilding. Its layout is unique, designed around large central squares which give the town an airy, spacious feel that you don't often find in colonial settlements.
The area sits on the ancestral lands of Ngāti Kauwhata and Rangitāne. Understanding the Māori history of the region adds a layer of depth to your visit, as the fertile plains of the Manawatū have supported communities for centuries.
Today, Feilding remains famous for its Saleyards, located just a stone's throw from the path. On Fridays, the town fills with farmers from all over the North Island. This blend of "rural heartland" and "Edwardian elegance" is what gives the Manchester-Warwick Street Path its unique character. You are walking through a living piece of New Zealand history that refuses to become a museum piece.
One of the best things about an urban walk is that "refuelling" doesn't involve a squashed muesli bar at the bottom of a backpack. Feilding has some fantastic spots to relax after your 2km loop:
Whether you're here for the architecture, the shopping, or just a bit of fresh air, the Manchester-Warwick Street Path is a delightful way to spend an hour in one of New Zealand's most charming towns.
