If you are looking for a classic Nelson weekend adventure that combines salty sea air, shaded forest trails, and enough distance to earn a hearty lunch, then the Moturoa / Rabbit Island Shared Pathway is calling your name. Tucked away in the Tasman Bay, just a short 15-minute drive from Richmond, this island is a cherished recreational gem for locals and a "must-do" for visitors seeking a flatter, more relaxed pace than the rugged hills of the nearby national parks.
Whether you are a seasoned hiker looking for a "recovery day" stroll, a family with energetic kids, or a cyclist wanting to cruise through pine-scented tracks, this 13-kilometre loop offers a refreshing slice of coastal paradise. It is the kind of place where the pace of life slows down as soon as you cross the causeway.
As you begin your journey from the main parking area near the beach, you’ll immediately feel the "island time" vibe. One half of your walk is dominated by the vast, shimmering expanse of the Tasman Bay and the Waimea Estuary. On a clear day, the views across the water toward the Arthur Range are simply spectacular, with snow-capped peaks often visible in the winter months. The other half of the trail plunges you into the quiet, cool world of commercial pine plantations. The scent of pine needles underfoot and the sound of the wind whistling through the tall trunks provide a wonderful contrast to the open coastal sections.
The path is "shared" in the truest sense of the word. You’ll likely pass friendly locals on mountain bikes, families with strollers, and occasionally even horse riders enjoying the dedicated equestrian trails. Because the island is so large, it rarely feels crowded, even on a blue-bird Saturday. The track is wide enough for easy passing, making it a stress-free experience for everyone.
The "challenge"—if you can call it that—is simply the distance. At 13 kilometres, it takes about 3.5 hours at a steady walking pace. However, because it’s a loop with various cross-tracks, you can easily customise your walk if you aren't feeling up for the full perimeter. It’s an exceptionally kid-friendly destination thanks to the flat ground and the promise of a swim at the end!
Ample free parking is available in designated lots close to the beach access points on Moturoa / Rabbit Island. The island is connected to the mainland by a causeway, with large grassed areas after the bridge providing convenient parking. Access is primarily via Redwood Road.

Loop
The island is connected to the mainland by this bridge, meaning you don't need to worry about ferry schedules. Once you cross the causeway, you’ll find ample free parking. Most people head straight toward the beach access points where there are large grassed areas and designated parking lots. Access is generally from dawn until dusk, but be sure to check the gate closing times posted at the entrance, as they change slightly between summer and winter.
Top Tip: The best time for birdwatching is usually two hours either side of high tide, as the rising water pushes the birds closer to the shore and the walking tracks.
Important Note: Please leave your furry friends at home. Dogs are not permitted on the island to protect the sensitive birdlife and the commercial forest operations.
In more recent history, the island was transformed by the planting of commercial pine forests, which creates the unique environment you see today—a working forest surrounded by a marine reserve. This blend of cultural heritage, industry, and conservation makes Moturoa / Rabbit Island a unique pillar of the Nelson Tasman identity.
The Moturoa / Rabbit Island Shared Pathway is more than just a walk; it’s an invitation to experience the relaxed, natural charm that makes the Nelson Tasman region so beloved. Whether you go for the birds, the beach, or the exercise, you’ll leave feeling refreshed and recharged.
