Of course, you cannot talk about this walk without mentioning the spectacular panoramic views from the top of the ridge. On a clear day, the vistas are absolutely breathtaking. Looking out across the undulating green hills of Waitomo, you can spot other ancient Māori fortification sites carved into the landscape. Turn your gaze further inland, and you will see the majestic Rangitoto mountain range. If you are lucky enough to walk this trail on a crisp, blue-sky day, you can even spot the snow-capped volcanic peaks of Mount Ruapehu rising on the distant horizon.

Getting There

The Opapaka Pā Walk is incredibly easy to find and serves as a great quick stop before or after a trip to the nearby Waitomo Caves.

To get there, head towards the Waitomo Caves region. Parking is located at the Waitomo Adventure Centre car park, which is situated on the main road (SH37), approximately 7 kilometres from the main Waitomo turn-off. This convenient parking area is about 2 kilometres before you reach the main Waitomo Caves Village, making it an easy addition to your day's road trip.

At the Adventure Centre, you will find ample parking and public toilets, which are handy to use before you set off on your walk.

Wildlife Spotting

The native forest section of the trail is alive with the chatter and movement of New Zealand’s unique birdlife. Because the walk is short and relatively quiet, it offers fantastic bird-watching opportunities for patient observers.

As you step into the bush, you will almost certainly be greeted by the friendly piwakawaka (fantail). These energetic little birds are year-round residents and love to flutter close to walkers, using the disturbed ground to snatch up tiny insects. Keep your ears open for the distinct, clear chime and gurgle of the tūī, and look up into the high canopy to spot the large, heavy kererū (New Zealand wood pigeon) feeding on native berries.

The delicate, high-pitched warble of the riroriro (grey warbler) provides a beautiful soundtrack to your walk, though these tiny birds are notoriously difficult to spot amongst the leaves. If you happen to visit near dusk, you might hear the haunting, nocturnal call of the ruru (morepork). If you are incredibly lucky, you might even catch a rare glimpse of a kārearea (New Zealand falcon) soaring high above the open farmland on the hunt.

• Spring brings vibrant new growth to the native forest and sweet birdsong, while Summer offers the best chance of clear skies for those distant views of Mount Ruapehu.
• Autumn temperatures are absolutely perfect for walking, and Winter often provides the crispest, clearest air for photography, though you will want to dress warmly for the exposed ridge.

Best time of day: We highly recommend starting this walk in the early morning or the late afternoon. Not only is the temperature cooler for the uphill farm section, but the golden hour light makes the rolling hills of the King Country look truly magical.

• Wear sturdy walking shoes or sneakers. While the track is generally well-formed, the farm section can get slippery after rain, and there are some steeper gradients.
• Bring a jacket, as the wind can whip up quickly once you leave the shelter of the bush and reach the exposed ridge.
• Pack a water bottle, sun protection (sunscreen and a hat are essential on the open farmland), and a camera to capture the views.
• Because this trail crosses working farmland, dogs are strictly not allowed to protect the livestock and local wildlife.
