If you’re looking for a spot that perfectly captures the wild, lush essence of the Taranaki region, you really can't go past Pukeiti Gardens. Located on the lower flanks of the mighty Taranaki Maunga, just a short drive from the coastal village of Ōakura, Pukeiti is much more than your standard botanical garden. It’s a massive 360-hectare ecological sanctuary where world-class horticultural displays meet rugged, regenerating rainforest.
Whether you’re a local looking for your weekend nature fix or a tourist wanting to see the "real" New Zealand bush without committing to a multi-day tramp, the Pukeiti Gardens Walks offer a bit of everything. The 8km loop we’re focusing on today is a moderate 3.5-hour journey that takes you from manicured beauty to the heart of the wild Taranaki forest.
Your journey begins at the Rainforest Centre, a modern, welcoming gateway that sets the tone for the adventure ahead. From here, you’ll find yourself standing at the edge of a network of over 21 kilometres of tracks. For this 8km loop, you’ll be heading past the vibrant, world-renowned rhododendron collections and deeper into the emerald green of the rainforest.
The first section of the walk is a gentle introduction. You’ll wander through the "manicured" areas, which, depending on the season, are an explosion of colour. However, the terrain soon shifts. As you leave the main garden paths behind, the track becomes more traditional "bush" territory. The ground beneath your boots is rich, dark, and acidic—a gift from the volcanic history of the nearby mountain.
The heart of this walk is the ascent to the Puke Te Whiti Summit. Standing at 490 metres above sea level, it requires a bit of puff. You’ll face an elevation gain of about 250 metres, which is enough to get the heart rate up without being overly punishing. The tracks are well-formed, but as you move into the rainforest sections, expect some steeper slopes and deep valleys. The air here is noticeably cooler and damp, filled with the scent of wet moss and fern fronds.
As you climb, you’ll notice the forest changing. This area was heavily logged back in the 1920s, and what you see today is a testament to nature’s resilience. The "regenerating" bush is thick and vigorous, but keep an eye out for the ancient rimu trees—stately survivors that managed to escape the saws nearly a century ago. Once you reach the summit lookout, the effort pays off instantly. On a clear day, the views are simply sensational, offering a panoramic sweep that takes in the Tasman Sea, the Pouakai range, and the Kaitake ranges. It’s the perfect spot to stop for a snack and soak in the scale of the Taranaki landscape.
Ample on-site parking is available and is free of charge. The car park is large enough to accommodate tour buses and self-contained motorhomes for overnight stays. It is conveniently located close to the Rainforest Centre and café. [10, 15]

Loop
Pukeiti is packed with "wow" moments. Here are a few things you absolutely shouldn’t miss:
Getting to Pukeiti is half the fun, as the drive takes you through the rolling green hills of Taranaki. From New Plymouth, it’s about a 25-minute drive. Head south on State Highway 45 towards Ōakura, then turn onto Carrington Road. Follow the signs—the road winds upwards towards the mountain, offering glimpses of the peak if the clouds are behaving.
There is ample on-site parking at the main entrance, and the best part? It’s completely free. The car park is large enough to handle tour buses and even self-contained motorhomes if you're touring the region. The car park is located right next to the Rainforest Centre and the café, so you don’t have far to lug your gear before you start.
Pukeiti is a haven for native birdlife, thanks to extensive predator control and the diverse range of plants providing a year-round buffet.
Tip: For the best birdwatching, try to start your walk early in the morning. The "dawn chorus" at Pukeiti is something quite special.
Pukeiti is a true year-round destination, but each season brings a different vibe:
Pukeiti holds a special place in the heart of the Taranaki community. Managed by the Taranaki Regional Council, it represents a massive conservation effort. The land itself is deeply connected to Taranaki Maunga, the ancestral mountain of the local iwi (tribes).
The gardens were established in the 1950s by enthusiasts who recognised the unique microclimate created by the mountain’s volcanic soil and high rainfall. Today, it serves as a bridge between the botanical world and the wild native heritage of New Zealand. The fact that entry is free is a point of pride for the region, ensuring that this incredible landscape remains accessible to everyone.
Please note that to protect the local wildlife and the delicate ecosystem, dogs are not permitted at Pukeiti.
Once you’ve finished the loop and perhaps browsed the Rainforest Centre, you’ll likely be craving a good feed. Head back down towards the coast to Ōakura (about 7.3km away) for some of the best post-hike spots in the region:
