If you are looking for a quintessential "local’s secret" in the heart of the Manawatū, the Quail Avenue Pathway in Feilding is exactly what you need. While New Zealand is world-renowned for its rugged Great Walks and alpine crossings, there is a special kind of magic found in these short, community-focused tracks that weave through our rural towns. This 0.55-kilometre pathway is a "short and sweet" urban link that serves as a peaceful escape for anyone needing a quick dose of nature without having to pack a heavy rucksack or drive for hours into the ranges.
As you step onto the well-maintained gravel surface, the first thing you’ll notice is the gentle pace of life here. The trail connects Quail Avenue with Homelands Avenue, acting as a green artery between two quiet residential areas. Because it is a point-to-point trail, it’s perfect for a quick out-and-back stroll, or as part of a larger loop through the charming streets of "Friendly Feilding."
The terrain is exceptionally kind to the legs. With a mere 12 metres of elevation gain, calling it a "climb" would be a bit of an exaggeration, but the slight undulation gives the path a natural, organic feel as it meanders through the landscape. The gravel is packed firm, making it an excellent choice for parents pushing prams, toddlers on scooters, or locals out for a morning power walk. Interestingly, this path is also open to horse riders—a rare and delightful feature for an urban pathway that reflects Feilding’s deep-rooted rural identity. You might just see the occasional hoof print in the gravel, a reminder that in this part of the country, the town and the farm are never far apart.
Walking the Quail Avenue Pathway feels like a deep breath for the soul. On one side, you have the comfort of the local community, and on the other, the rustle of trees and the chatter of birds. It isn't a grand wilderness adventure, but it doesn't try to be. Instead, it offers a moment of quiet reflection, a place to stretch your legs, and a safe environment for tamariki (children) to explore their local environment.
While the Quail Avenue Pathway may be modest in distance, it packs a punch when it comes to accessibility and community charm. Here are a few things that make this stroll a standout:
Street parking is available at either end of the pathway, on Quail Avenue or Homelands Avenue, Feilding.

Point to point
Feilding is a breeze to navigate, and finding the Quail Avenue Pathway is no different. Located in the northern part of the town, you have two main entry points.
If you choose to start at the Quail Avenue end, you’ll find plenty of easy street parking along the kerbside. The entrance is clearly marked and easy to spot. Alternatively, if you are coming from the other direction, you can park on Homelands Avenue. Both ends are situated in quiet, safe residential streets, so you won’t have to worry about the hustle and bustle of heavy traffic while you’re getting your gear ready.
Feilding itself is only a 15-to-20-minute drive from Palmerston North, making this an ideal "lunch break" escape for city dwellers or a great leg-stretcher for tourists passing through the Manawatū region on State Highway 54.
Don’t let the urban setting fool you—the Quail Avenue Pathway is a hive of avian activity. Because the path is lined with established trees and garden borders, it serves as a corridor for many of New Zealand’s favourite native birds.
The most common companion on your walk will be the Fantail (Piwakawaka). These friendly little birds are known for their aerobatic displays, often flitting just a few metres ahead of walkers to snack on the tiny insects stirred up by your footsteps. Their chattering "cheep cheep" is the soundtrack to this trail.
Keep your eyes on the higher branches for the Tūī. You’ll likely hear them before you see them; their complex songs of whistles, clicks, and gurgles are unmistakable. If the nearby gardens have flowering kōwhai or harakeke (flax), you’re almost guaranteed a sighting of their iridescent blue-black feathers and iconic white throat tufts.
Tip: The best time for birdwatching is usually early morning or late afternoon when the air is still and the birds are most active in their search for food.
The beauty of the Quail Avenue Pathway is that it is truly a track for all seasons.
Feilding, or Te Horo, has a rich history that adds a layer of depth to even the simplest walk. Known as "Friendly Feilding," the town has won the title of New Zealand’s Most Beautiful Town multiple times. It was established as part of the Manchester Block in the 1870s, settled by immigrants who were looking for a new life in the fertile plains of the Manawatū.
The Quail Avenue Pathway is managed by the Manawatū District Council. It represents the modern face of the town—clean, accessible, and designed with the community’s quality of life in mind. While the path itself is modern, it sits on land that has been cherished for generations for its productivity and its welcoming climate. By walking here, you are participating in a long tradition of enjoying the gentle, rolling landscape of this region.
One of the best things about a short walk in Feilding is that you are never more than a few minutes away from a great meal or a cold drink. After you’ve finished your wander, head into the town centre to refuel at one of these local favourites:
