If you find yourself passing through the Manawatū and fancy a stretch of the legs that offers a bit more than just a roadside stop, the River Loop Amble & Flax Walkway in Foxton is an absolute gem. This isn’t a rugged mountain expedition; instead, it is a gentle, soulful journey through the heart of one of New Zealand’s most storied riverside towns. At just 2.5km, this easy loop is less of a "hike" and more of a restorative "stroll"—or an "amble," as the name so perfectly suggests.
The walk begins near the banks of the Foxton River Loop. For those who aren't familiar with the geography here, this section of water is a fascinating oxbow. Once the main channel of the mighty Manawatū River, it became disconnected decades ago, leaving behind a tranquil, mirror-like aquatic haven that feels worlds away from the rushing currents of the main river.
As you set off, you’ll notice the terrain is incredibly forgiving. The path is a delightful mix of well-maintained gravel paths, soft grassy tracks, and sturdy timber boardwalks that keep your boots dry while getting you close to the water’s edge. Because the total elevation gain is a mere 11 metres, it is the perfect choice for families with little ones in tow or for those who simply want to enjoy nature without the huffing and puffing of a steep climb.
The trail winds gracefully through stands of harakeke (native New Zealand flax), which seems to whisper the town’s history as you pass. You’ll feel the transition from the manicured edges of the township into a more wild, riparian environment. There’s a certain stillness here; the water often sits so flat that it perfectly reflects the massive Manawatū sky. Along the way, you’ll find plenty of spots to stop and just breathe. It’s the kind of walk where you don’t feel the need to rush to the finish line—you’re content just being exactly where you are.
While the walk is short, it is packed with features that make it well worth the detour.
The Seaview Gardens Vantage Point Don't let the "11-metre elevation" fool you into thinking there are no views. The gentle rise to Seaview Gardens provides a lovely panoramic perspective of the surrounding landscape. From here, you can clearly see the unique "loop" shape of the river and gain a better appreciation for how the town of Foxton is cradled by the water. It’s a fantastic spot for a photo, especially when the light hits the verdant greenery of the Manawatū plains.
Parking is available around Harbour Street in Foxton, as the River Loop Reserve and Playground is located there. The trail can also be accessed from the war memorial, heading down Main Street, into Clyde Street, and then left into Harbour Street.

Loop
Maritime History & Play For those walking with kids, the River Loop Reserve and Playground is a massive highlight. Foxton was once a bustling deep-sea port, and the playground pays homage to this with a fantastic "ship" theme. It’s a great place to let the kids burn off some steam while you soak in the maritime atmosphere.
The Harakeke (Flax) Heritage As the name suggests, the Flax Walkway is a tribute to the plant that once drove the local economy. In the late 1800s, Foxton was the "flax capital" of New Zealand. As you walk among the tall, bladed leaves of the harakeke, keep an eye out for the interpretive signs. These boards do a wonderful job of weaving together the stories of the early Māori inhabitants, who first recognised the value of the flax, and the colonial settlers who built a massive industry around it.
The Te Awahou Connection The walkway serves as a vital link in a much larger chain of trails. At the northern end, you’ll hit the Te Awahou Boardwalk, which feels modern and sleek. If you’re feeling energetic, you can continue south onto the Piriharakeke Track, or even link up with the Sunset Walkway further toward the coast.
Finding the trailhead is straightforward, as it’s located right in the heart of Foxton. The most popular place to start is at Harbour Street, where you’ll find plenty of parking near the River Loop Reserve and Playground.
If you are already exploring the town centre, you can also access the trail from the war memorial. Simply head down Main Street, turn into Clyde Street, and then take a left into Harbour Street. Because it’s a loop, you can’t really get lost—just follow the river and the signs!
The River Loop is a sanctuary for birdlife, and even a casual observer is likely to spot some iconic New Zealand species.
Tip: For the best birdwatching, try to visit in the early morning or late afternoon when the birds are most active and the "dawn chorus" or evening songs are at their peak.
The River Loop Amble & Flax Walkway is a true all-season track.
Foxton (or Te Awahou in Māori) holds a special place in the history of Aotearoa. This area was an essential site for local iwi, who utilised the river and the abundant harakeke for weaving, trade, and transport long before European arrival.
The geological story of the river loop itself is a reminder of the power of nature. Rivers are living things that change their course over centuries; this loop is a "fossil" of the old river path.
In a wider sense, this walk is a gateway to the Manawatū River Estuary, a Ramsar site of international significance. This means the area is recognised globally as a vital wetland habitat. When you walk the Flax Walkway, you are standing on the edge of a world-class ecological treasure. The town itself is also famous for its Dutch heritage (look out for the giant windmill nearby!), making Foxton a unique cultural melting pot in rural New Zealand.
One of the best things about a trail that starts and ends in town is the proximity to excellent food and drink. You’re spoiled for choice in Foxton!
Whether you're a local looking for a new weekend routine or a tourist passing through on State Highway 1, the River Loop Amble & Flax Walkway offers a beautiful, low-effort, high-reward experience that captures the very essence of Foxton.
