If you find yourself in the boutique town of Geraldine, nestled at the foot of the Southern Alps, there is one experience you simply cannot skip. While many visitors treat Geraldine as a quick coffee stop on their way to Lake Tekapo or Mount Cook, the locals know that the town’s true heart beats along the banks of the Waihi River. The River Track Geraldine, officially known as the Waihi River Walkway, is a gentle, 2.5-kilometre loop that offers a refreshing slice of nature right in the centre of town.
This isn’t just a walk; it’s a community treasure. Whether you are a tourist looking to stretch your legs after a long drive or a local taking the dog for its daily outing, this trail provides a sense of peace that belies its proximity to the main street. With an elevation gain of only 10 metres and a duration of about 30 minutes, it is accessible to almost everyone, yet it packs enough scenic variety to satisfy even the most seasoned hiker.
Stepping onto the River Track Geraldine feels like entering a hidden world. One moment you are browsing the boutique shops of Talbot Street, and the next, you are enveloped by the rustle of leaves and the gentle murmur of the Waihi River. The trail is a loop, meaning you get a fresh perspective at every turn without having to backtrack.
The terrain underfoot is a pleasant mix that keeps things interesting. You’ll find yourself transitioning from well-maintained gravelled sections to soft grassy patches and smooth paved footpaths. Because the track is largely flat and undulating, it is a fantastic choice for families with prams or visitors using wheelchairs, though a few sections might require a little extra care after heavy rain.
As you wander, the path guides you through a captivating blend of exotic and native vegetation. On one side, you might see grand European trees that turn a brilliant gold in autumn, and on the other, ancient New Zealand podocarp species that have stood for centuries. The river itself is your constant companion, its clear waters dancing over river stones. There is something deeply restorative about the way the light filters through the canopy here, creating a dappled effect on the forest floor.
The walk also integrates seamlessly with the town’s recreational hubs. You’ll pass by the local playground and skatepark, which are usually buzzing with energy. If you are walking with kids, expect the "30-minute walk" to take a little longer as the temptation of the slides and swings is often too much to resist! For those with four-legged friends, the track is dog-friendly, though you’ll need to keep them on a leash for most of the way, except for the clearly marked designated dog exercise areas where they can burn off some steam.
Parking is available on Talbot Street, directly across from the Geraldine Library and Service Centre. Alternatively, you can find parking near the Crown Hotel car park, both offering convenient access to the trailheads.

Loop
While the entire loop is picturesque, there are a few standout features that make the Waihi River Walkway truly special:
Finding the trailhead is incredibly easy, making this one of the most convenient walks in South Canterbury.
The most popular starting point is on Talbot Street, directly across from the Geraldine Library and Service Centre. There is plenty of street parking available here. Alternatively, you can start your loop near the Crown Hotel car park. Both locations offer clear signage to get you moving in the right direction. Because it is a loop, it doesn't matter which way you head—you’ll end up back where you started, ready for a well-deserved treat at a local cafe.
For such a short walk, the River Track Geraldine is surprisingly rich in birdlife. The combination of river access and thick native bush creates a perfect habitat for many of New Zealand’s favourite feathered residents.
Tip: The best time for bird spotting is early morning or late afternoon when the "dawn chorus" or evening activity is at its peak. Bring a pair of binoculars if you have them, but even without them, the songs alone are worth the trip.
The Waihi River Walkway is truly a track for all seasons, each offering a distinct atmosphere:
Geraldine is a town that prides itself on its "boutique" feel and its deep connection to the land. The Waihi River has long been central to life here, first for Māori who utilised the area's rich resources and later for European settlers who established the town in the mid-19th century.
The name Waihi can be translated from Māori to mean "hissing water," which you can certainly hear in the swifter sections of the river after rain. The town itself was originally a base for timber milling, but today, conservation efforts have shifted the focus toward protecting the remaining native bush and enhancing the river environment. The Geraldine Sculpture Trail, which you encounter on the walk, is a testament to the town's vibrant arts community and its desire to share local stories through creativity.
One of the best things about the River Track Geraldine is that it ends exactly where the best food begins. You’ll likely have worked up an appetite, and you are spoiled for choice:
Whether you’re a local or just passing through, the Waihi River Walkway is the perfect way to experience the charm, nature, and community spirit of Geraldine. It’s short, sweet, and serves as a gentle reminder of why we love the New Zealand outdoors.
