If you are looking for a unique way to experience the creative heart of Gisborne, lace up your walking shoes and head out on the Sea Walls Tairāwhiti Murals Walk. This isn't your typical bushwalk or coastal hike; instead, it is a captivating, self-guided urban trail that winds through the city’s central business district, turning public spaces into a dynamic outdoor gallery.
Spanning an easy 6 kilometres, this flat loop trail takes about 1.5 hours to complete at a leisurely stroll. The terrain is entirely paved, making it exceptionally accessible for pram-pushing families, casual walkers, and wheelchair users alike. It is also highly versatile—if you would prefer to explore on two wheels, it makes for a fantastic, easy-going bike ride.
As you wander through Gisborne's streets, you will find yourself on a vibrant treasure hunt. The trail leads you past more than 25 massive, stunning murals painted on civic buildings, alleyway walls, and retail storefronts. There is a real sense of excitement as you round a street corner and come face-to-face with a towering, multi-storey work of art. Because it is completely flat with just 20 metres of elevation gain, the walk is incredibly gentle, allowing you to focus all your energy on soaking in the visual feast. It is also incredibly kid-friendly and dog-friendly (just keep your furry friend on a lead), making it a brilliant weekend activity for the whole family.
The undeniable highlight of this walk is the world-class street art, which was created as part of the global Sea Walls: Artists for Oceans initiative. Launched in collaboration with the PangeaSeed Foundation, the project brings together international and New Zealand artists to practice 'artivism'—using public art to inspire ocean conservation.
Each mural tells a powerful story, addressing urgent marine issues such as ocean acidification, plastic pollution, overfishing, and the plight of endangered marine species. Rather than feeling clinical, the messages are deeply moving and beautiful, often weaving in rich Māori legends and cultural narratives that celebrate the Tairāwhiti region's connection to the moana (ocean).
Parking in Gisborne's CBD consists of a mix of metered, time-restricted (60-minute and 120-minute) spaces, and some free all-day options, all within easy walking distance of Gladstone Road. [3, 7] Free all-day parking can be found at the War Memorial Theatre car park on Bright Street. [6] The 'Farmers' car park on Grey and Bright Street offers parking for $1 per hour. [6] Time-restricted parking areas are generally enforced Monday to Friday from 8:30 am to 5 pm, and Saturday from 9 am to 12 noon. [7]

Loop
The walk is located right in the heart of Gisborne’s CBD, making it incredibly easy to access. Because it is a loop trail, you can start and finish almost anywhere along the route, though Gladstone Road is a natural central starting point.
While this is an urban walk, Gisborne’s leafy streets and close proximity to the rivers and coast mean you are never far from New Zealand’s native birdlife. As you look up at the murals, keep your ears open for the distinct sounds of nature.
The Sea Walls Tairāwhiti Murals Walk is a true year-round attraction. Because it is set in an urban environment, you do not have to worry about muddy tracks or winter washouts.
Tairāwhiti Gisborne holds a proud place in New Zealand’s geography and history. It is famously the first city in the world to see the light of each new day, giving it a unique spiritual energy. The region has a deep, ancestral connection to the moana, beginning with the arrival of the first navigating waka (canoes) from Polynesia.
The Sea Walls Tairāwhiti project, which began in 2018, beautifully bridges this rich history with modern conservation. By weaving traditional Māori concepts of kaitiakitanga (guardianship) into contemporary street art, the murals serve as a visual contract between the community and the environment. It is a powerful reminder of our role as guardians of the coast, transforming everyday city walls into educational platforms that foster immense local pride.
