If you are looking for a hike that perfectly balances a heart-pumping workout with world-class views, the Skyline Track at the Christchurch Adventure Park (CAP) is calling your name. Nestled in the iconic Port Hills of Canterbury, this isn’t just your average walk in the woods; it’s an immersion into a high-energy adventure hub where the serenity of nature meets the thrill of mountain biking and ziplining.
The journey typically begins at the base of the park, just a 15-minute drive from the Christchurch city centre. As you set off, you’ll immediately feel the transition from the urban bustle to the crisp, pine-scented air of the hills. The experience is often defined by the Uphill Trail, a steady, well-maintained ascent that winds its way up the valley. Underfoot, the terrain is a mix of gravelled paths and forest floor, providing a solid grip as you gain elevation.
As you climb the 470 metres of vertical gain, the landscape unfolds in layers. One moment you are tucked under the shade of towering pines, and the next, you are emerging onto open hillsides where the wind carries the distant scent of the Pacific Ocean. The beauty of this trail lies in its dual personality. On one hand, you have the quiet, rhythmic sounds of your own footsteps and the rustle of mānuka; on the other, you might hear the whirr of a mountain bike hub or the excited screams of zipliners soaring hundreds of metres above the canopy. It’s a uniquely modern hiking experience that feels quintessentially "Christchurch."
The gradient is generally moderate and consistent, allowing you to find a good "tramping" rhythm. However, keep some gas in the tank for the final push toward the summit. The track gets noticeably steeper as you approach the top, but the reward is more than worth the extra sweat. Once you reach the peak, the 360-degree views will literally take your breath away. You are standing on the rim of an ancient volcano, looking out over the sprawling Canterbury Plains toward the snow-capped Southern Alps (Kā Tiritiri o te Moana).
Because this is a loop experience, you have a couple of choices for the return. Many locals opt for the "up-hike, down-lift" combo. After conquering the climb, you can hop on the chairlift for a complimentary ride back down to the village. It’s a fantastic way to save your knees while soaking in a bird’s-eye view of the entire park. If you prefer to keep your boots on the ground, you can connect with the Forest Loop Trail to complete your circuit, winding through pockets of regenerating native bush and quiet forest glades.
Ample free parking is available at the Christchurch Adventure Park, with approximately 500 carparks. During peak times, it is recommended to carpool as the carparks can fill up quickly. Electric vehicle charging stations and space for campervans are also provided. The park's address is 50 McVicar Drive.

The Skyline Track is a photographer’s dream, offering several distinct highlights that make it a standout in the Canterbury region:
Getting to the trailhead is remarkably easy, making it a favourite for a pre-work mission or a weekend family outing. The Christchurch Adventure Park is located at 50 McVicar Drive in the suburb of Hoon Hay.
From the city centre, head south toward the Port Hills via Barrington Street or Cashmere Road. It’s a straight shot that shouldn't take more than 15 to 20 minutes. Once you arrive, you’ll find ample free parking with roughly 500 spaces available. However, because the park is a magnet for mountain bikers and families, these spots can fill up fast on sunny Saturdays and Sundays. We recommend carpooling if you’re heading out with a group.
For those driving electric vehicles, you’re in luck—there are EV charging stations on-site. There is also dedicated space for campervans, so tourists exploring the South Island in a motorhome can easily fit a hike into their itinerary without worrying about tight parking.
While the park is a hub of human activity, the surrounding bush is home to some of New Zealand’s most iconic feathered residents. Keep your eyes peeled and your ears open for:
Tip: The best time for bird watching is early morning or late afternoon when the park is quieter and the birds are most active. Bring a pair of binoculars if you’re a keen twitcher!
The Skyline Track is a true all-seasons trail, but each season brings a different flavour to the experience:
A Quick Note: Please remember that this park is not dog-friendly. To protect the local wildlife and ensure safety around high-speed mountain bikers, pups need to stay at home for this one. However, it is very kid-friendly, especially with the chairlift and fairy doors!
The Port Hills (Ngā Kohatu Whakarakaraka o Tamatea Pōkai Whenua) hold deep significance for the local iwi, Ngāi Tahu. They are part of the eroded rim of the Lyttelton volcano, which erupted millions of years ago. The rugged outcrops you see along the Skyline Track are remnants of ancient lava flows.
Historically, these hills served as a vital lookout and transit point for Māori moving between the Canterbury Plains and the harbours of Banks Peninsula. In more recent history, the area has seen a massive push for conservation and reforestation. Following the devastating Port Hills fires in 2017, there has been an incredible community effort to replant native species. Walking the Skyline Track allows you to see this resilience firsthand, as young tōtara and kōwhai begin to reclaim the slopes.
One of the best things about the Skyline Track is that you finish right at the doorstep of some fantastic refuelling spots. You don’t even have to leave the carpark to find a great meal!
Whether you're a local looking for your weekly cardio or a tourist wanting to see the best of Christchurch in a single afternoon, the Skyline Track offers an unbeatable blend of effort and reward. See you on the hill!
