If you are looking for a slice of Taranaki paradise that offers maximum reward for minimum effort, the Stony River (Hangatahua) Walkway is a local secret you need to discover. Located in the quiet, coastal-adjacent town of Ōkato, this 3-kilometre return journey is the quintessential New Zealand afternoon stroll. It’s the kind of walk where the air feels noticeably cooler and cleaner the moment you step under the canopy, and the "mountain" (Taranaki Maunga) feels like a constant, silent companion watching over your shoulder.
The journey begins at the William Corbett Scenic Reserve, a beautiful pocket of lowland forest that feels far more ancient than its proximity to the road suggests. As you set off, you’ll find yourself enveloped in a lush, green corridor. The terrain here is mostly flat and incredibly gentle, making it a fantastic option for families with children or those who just want to stretch their legs without a punishing climb. You’ll be walking alongside the Kaihihi Stream, whose soft babbling provides a relaxing soundtrack to the first half of your walk.
As you move through the forest, the track transitions from the dense shade of native bush into open, rolling farmland. This is where the "stony" character of the area really reveals itself. You’ll notice the ground can become a bit more uneven here, with the occasional rocky patch or muddy spot if there’s been recent rain. It’s a classic Taranaki landscape—vibrant green grass, sturdy fences, and wide-open skies.
While the walk is officially an out-and-back route, you might notice some locals or more adventurous souls mentioning a loop option. This involves crossing the unbridged Kaihihi Stream. However, a word of caution: there is no public bridge here, and the ford is intended for private farm use. The official recommendation is to enjoy the scenery and return the way you came. This ensures you stay on public land and avoids the risk of getting caught out by a rising stream, which can become quite impassable after a heavy Taranaki downpour.
The absolute crown jewel of this walkway is the view. On a clear day, as you emerge from the bush into the farm sections, Taranaki Maunga and the Pouākai Range reveal themselves in all their glory. Because you are at a lower elevation, the mountain looks immense, dominating the skyline and providing an incredible backdrop for photos.
Plenty of parking is available at the William Corbett Reserve carpark, located at the end of Old South Road in Ōkato. Additional spots can be found near the trailhead at Ōkato Domain and Hickford Place. [3, 8]

Out and back
Another highlight is the Stony River itself. Known as one of the cleanest rivers in New Zealand, its waters are crisp and refreshing. Along the track, you’ll find several inviting swimming holes. During the height of summer, there is nothing quite like taking a mid-walk dip in the cool, clear water to recharge your batteries. It’s a hit with the kids and a great way to turn a short walk into a half-day adventure.
For those with an interest in New Zealand’s rich history, keep an eye out for the remnants of Ngaweka Pa. Located within the Ōkato Domain bush area, these historical markers offer a poignant reminder of the Māori heritage that is woven into this landscape. It adds a layer of depth to the walk, knowing that people have lived, worked, and found sanctuary in this beautiful corner of the world for centuries.
Finding the trailhead is straightforward, even if you’re visiting from out of town. The main entry point is at the William Corbett Scenic Reserve, located at the very end of Old South Road in Ōkato.
The walk is well-signposted, and because the town is small and friendly, you’re never far from help if you happen to take a wrong turn.
The Stony River (Hangatahua) Walkway is a haven for native birdlife, thanks to the healthy stands of kohekohe and kawakawa trees.
Tip: Early morning is the best time for birdwatching when the "dawn chorus" is at its peak and the birds are most active.
The Stony River Walkway is a year-round destination, but each season brings its own unique flavour:
The river's name, Hangatahua, carries significant weight. It is one of the most pristine rivers in the country, flowing directly from the slopes of Taranaki Maunga to the Tasman Sea. Because it carries volcanic debris from the mountain, the riverbed is filled with the smooth, grey stones that give the town and the river their English name.
The William Corbett Scenic Reserve itself is a piece of local legacy. Gifted to the Crown in 1958 by the Corbett family, it stands as a testament to the community's long-standing commitment to preserving the natural beauty of the region. This area was historically a bustling hub of Māori activity, and the presence of the Ngaweka Pa reminds us that this land has been a source of sustenance and spirituality for generations.
Today, the walkway is a bridge between the wild beauty of the National Park and the productive pastoral life of modern Taranaki. It’s a place where conservation and agriculture exist side-by-side, offering a true "kiwi" experience.
Once you’ve finished your stroll and soaked in the mountain views, you don’t have to head straight home. Ōkato has some fantastic local spots to refuel:
