If you are looking to explore a side of Auckland that many tourists—and even some locals—overlook, the Te Araroa Trail: Onehunga to Puhinui section is an absolute must-do. This 23.3-kilometre point-to-point journey takes you along the edge of the sweeping Manukau Harbour, offering a fascinating mix of coastal beauty, working farmland, volcanic history, and rich cultural heritage.
Rated as an easy, flat walk, this is a fantastic option for a long-distance day hike. It is highly accessible and kid-friendly (the little ones will especially love the farm animals along the way!), though you will need to leave your four-legged friends at home as dogs are not permitted on this section of the trail. Grab a comfortable pair of walking shoes, pack some snacks, and let’s dive into what makes this walk so special.

Your journey begins at the Onehunga Bay Reserve, a lively park that also marks the finishing point of Auckland’s famous Coast to Coast Walkway. Standing at the shoreline, you will immediately feel the expansive presence of the Manukau Harbour.
Setting off towards the southeast, your first major landmark is the striking Māngere Pedestrian Bridge. This impressive modern structure curves gracefully over the water, built alongside the historic remnants of the old bridge. If you look closely beneath the old structure, you are looking at history: its piles were anchored directly into the ancient lava crust flowing from nearby Māngere Mountain.
Once across the bridge, the trail hugs the coastline along Orpheus Drive and Kiwi Esplanade. This is a wonderfully scenic stretch where the salty breeze keeps you cool. Before long, the urban landscape softens as you enter Ambury Regional Park. This is a highlight of the trip—a real, working farm right on the edge of the city. You will wander past paddocks of sheep, cows, and goats, often sharing the path with friendly farm animals.
Leaving the farmyard behind, you will step onto the Māngere Foreshore Track. This section leads you through peaceful coastal wetlands and past the Watercare rehabilitation area. What was once industrial space has been beautifully restored into a thriving sanctuary for native birdlife.
As the trail continues, it skirts the edges of Ihumātao, a landscape deeply sacred to Māori, where ancient garden mounds still ripple through the earth. From here, the trail transitions into a brief urban stretch, navigating George Bolt Memorial Drive, Tom Pearce Drive, and Puhinui Road. While this part reminds you of Auckland’s bustling suburban fabric, it is a flat, easy walk that quickly delivers you to Prices Road.
Free parking is available at the start of the trail at Onehunga Bay Reserve, accessible from Beachcroft Avenue. At the trail's end, free parking can be found at Puhinui Reserve, located at the end of Prices Road off Puhinui Road.

Point to point
The final stretch of your hike brings you into the tranquil folds of Puhinui Reserve. Wandering through this peaceful working farm and wetland, you will feel miles away from the city. The trail winds past the unique Puhinui Craters before concluding, offering lovely, quiet views back across the southern reaches of the harbour.

Because this is a point-to-point trail, a little logistics planning is required.
Tip: If you are walking with a friend, park one car at Puhinui Reserve and drive together to the start at Onehunga. Alternatively, Auckland's public transport network connects both ends relatively well via trains and buses.

The Manukau Harbour is a globally significant feeding ground for wading birds, making this trail an absolute paradise for birdwatchers. Pack a pair of binoculars if you have them!

This stretch of the Te Araroa Trail is steeped in cultural and geological significance. For centuries, the rich volcanic soils surrounding Māngere and Ihumātao were utilized by Māori for gardening, taking advantage of the microclimates created by the stone fields.
In more recent decades, the area has undergone incredible ecological restoration. The Watercare coastal rehabilitation project has successfully transformed old oxidation ponds back into pristine coastal wetlands. This effort has restored the natural mauri (life force) of the harbour, creating a safe, flourishing sanctuary for both native wildlife and modern Aucklanders to enjoy.
