If you’ve ever stood on the shores of Lake Wānaka and wondered where all that magnificent alpine water goes, the Outlet Track is your answer. This trail is a local treasure and a "must-do" for any visitor, offering a gentle, sensory-rich journey along the banks of the mighty Clutha River/Mata-Au. Whether you’re a seasoned hiker looking for a recovery stroll, a family with a stroller in tow, or a mountain biker seeking a scenic flow, this track delivers a slice of Central Otago paradise without the need for heavy hiking boots or a massive vertical climb.
The Outlet Track is less of a "hike" and more of an immersive riverside experience. Stretching roughly 6km return (though easily extended), it follows the very beginning of the Clutha River as it surges out of Lake Wānaka and begins its long journey toward the Pacific Ocean. The terrain is a well-maintained gravel path that undulates gently, staying mostly level as it hugs the contours of the riverbank.
As you set off from the Lake Wānaka end, you’ll immediately notice the water. It’s a striking, vibrant shade of turquoise—so clear you can see the smooth river stones on the bottom and, quite often, large trout hovering in the current. The trail winds through a charming mix of native mānuka and kānuka scrub, which fills the air with a sweet, earthy scent. In between the natives, you’ll find towering deciduous trees like poplars and willows that lean over the water, creating a tunnel of greenery.
What makes this walk so special is the constant soundtrack of the river. One moment it’s a glassy, deep emerald pool, and the next, it’s a rushing rapid swirling around rocky outcrops. Because it’s an easy grade with only about 60 metres of elevation gain, you don't have to spend your time looking at your feet; instead, you can keep your eyes on the horizon, where the jagged, snow-dusted peaks of the Southern Alps frame the landscape. It’s a popular spot for locals walking their dogs or kids on balance bikes, giving the trail a warm, community feel that’s quintessentially Wānaka.
The undisputed star of the show is the Clutha River/Mata-Au itself. As New Zealand's highest-volume river, seeing it at its source is powerful. The transition from the calm, expansive lake to the purposeful, flowing river is a sight to behold.
Good off-road parking is available at the carpark at the end of Outlet Road near the campground, which serves as a primary trailhead. Another access point with parking is at the bottom of Gunn Road in Albert Town. Both locations offer ample turning space.

Out and back
For the photographers among us, the autumn colours are a mandatory highlight. Around April and May, the exotic trees lining the banks turn into pillars of fire—brilliant golds, oranges, and yellows that reflect perfectly in the blue water. It is, without a doubt, one of the most photographed spots in the region for a reason.
If you’re a fan of fishing, bring your rod! The Clutha is world-renowned for its trout fishing. You’ll often see anglers waders-deep in the river, casting lines for hefty brown and rainbow trout. Even if you aren't fishing, watching the "rise" of a fish in the evening light is a peaceful way to pass the time.
Another unique feature is the trail's connection to the Te Araroa Trail. This 3,000km walking route spans the length of New Zealand, and the Outlet Track forms a scenic link in that epic journey. Walking here means you're sharing the path with "thru-hikers" who have walked all the way from Cape Reinga!
Accessing the Outlet Track is straightforward, with two main entry points depending on which direction you’d like to walk.
Both locations offer ample turning space and are well-signposted.
The riverside habitat is a haven for New Zealand’s native birdlife. As you walk through the mānuka groves, keep a sharp eye out for the Pīwakawaka (Fantail). These tiny, energetic birds are incredibly friendly and will often fly within a metre of you, darting around to catch the insects you disturb as you walk.
High in the canopy, you’re likely to hear the melodic, bell-like chimes of the Korimako (Bellbird) and the throatier, complex whistles of the Tūī. If you look toward the water, you might spot the Pūtakitaki (Paradise Shellduck) with their distinctive white heads (females) or dark heads (males).
A real treat is spotting the Pūteketeke (Australasian Crested Grebe). These elegant water birds are a conservation success story in Wānaka, and while they are more common on the lakefront, they can occasionally be seen near the river mouth. Look for their distinctive "mullet" of feathers and their graceful diving patterns.
The Outlet Track is truly a year-round destination, but each season brings its own flavour:
The Clutha River/Mata-Au holds immense significance in New Zealand. To Māori, the Mata-Au was a vital mahinga kai (food gathering source) and a key transport route for moving pounamu (greenstone) from the west coast. The name Mata-Au refers to the "surface current," a nod to the river's power and speed.
Geologically, the "outlet" marks the spot where the massive glacier that formed Lake Wānaka finally retreated, leaving behind the moraine that the river now cuts through. When you walk this track, you are walking through a landscape shaped by ice and water over thousands of years. Today, it remains a vital part of the Upper Clutha conservation network, with ongoing efforts to protect the native vegetation and water quality.
One of the best things about the Outlet Track is its proximity to some of the best treats in the district.
If you finish at the Albert Town end, you are spoilt for choice. Pembroke Patisserie is a local legend—people have been known to drive from Queenstown just for their almond croissants. It’s an artisan bakery that blends French technique with Kiwi heart. Their custard squares are a perfect post-walk reward.
Just around the corner is Double Black Cafe, which offers a fantastic "all-day" menu. If you’ve worked up a real hunger, their eggs benedict is top-tier, and the coffee is consistently excellent.
For those finishing in the late afternoon, The Albie Tavern is the place to be. It’s a classic, friendly Kiwi pub with a great beer garden. It’s very kid-friendly (there’s a play area) and serves up hearty fare like pizzas and blue cod that hits the spot after 6km of fresh air.
Whether you’re here for the exercise, the photography, or just a quiet moment by the water, the Outlet Track is a beautiful reminder of why Wānaka is so special. Enjoy the stroll!
