If you are looking for a way to soak up the soul of Nelson without needing to pack a heavy tramping pack or head deep into the backcountry, the Three Gardens Walk is exactly what you need. This 5.61km urban loop is a gentle, two-hour journey that proves you don’t have to climb a mountain to find peace and beauty in the Top of the South. It is an "easy" grade walk, meaning it is perfectly suited for families with little ones in tow, elderly walkers, or anyone just wanting a breezy Sunday stroll with the dog.
The adventure kicks off at one of Nelson’s most photographed landmarks: the Church Steps. Located at the top of Trafalgar Street, these steps act as a grand gateway between the bustling shopping precinct and the quiet sanctuary of Church Hill. As you ascend the steps—hewn from beautiful Tonga Bay granite—you’ll feel the city noise begin to fade. At the summit sits the magnificent Christ Church Cathedral, surrounded by the gardens of Pikimai (Church Hill). The terrain here is mostly paved or well-maintained gravel paths, with only a 20-metre elevation gain, so you won't be huffing and puffing too much.
From the cathedral, the trail takes a historical turn. You’ll wander through the mature trees of Church Hill before descending towards Nile Street. A quick walk east brings you to Shelbourne Street and the Hallowell Cemetery. This part of the walk feels like stepping back in time; it’s a quiet, poignant spot that offers a real sense of Nelson’s early colonial days.
The final "garden" in this trio is perhaps the most spectacular: Queens Gardens. After looping back through the central streets, you’ll enter this Victorian-inspired oasis. Walking through the gates feels like entering a living painting. The paths meander around the serpentine Eel Pond, over bridges, and past the melodic hum of the water wheel. It’s the kind of place where you’ll find yourself stopping every few metres to take a photo or simply watch the ducks. The walk eventually loops back toward the city centre, completing a circuit that makes you feel like you’ve seen the very best of Nelson’s "backyard."
The Three Gardens Walk is packed with "wow" moments for such a short distance. Here are the spots you absolutely cannot miss:
Parking is available in various street parking spots and public car parks throughout central Nelson, particularly near Trafalgar Street and the Church Steps.

Loop
The beauty of this walk is its accessibility. Because it starts in the heart of Nelson Central, you can't really miss it.
While you are in the middle of the city, the "three gardens" act as a vital corridor for local birdlife. Keep your eyes peeled and your ears open for these locals:
Nelson is famous for its sunshine, making this walk a great option all year round. However, each season brings its own flavour:
The Three Gardens Walk isn't just about plants; it's a walk through the layers of Nelson’s history. To the local iwi, the area of Church Hill is known as Pikimai. Long before the first European ships arrived, this hill was a strategic pā (fortified village) site, offering a clear view of the surrounding plains and the sea.
When the New Zealand Company settlers arrived in the 1840s, they identified this same hill as the administrative heart of their new "Nelson." You can see this transition in the architecture and the way the city is laid out. The Hallowell Cemetery serves as a permanent record of those early, often difficult, colonial years.
The inclusion of the Maitai River's influence (via the Eel Pond) reminds us of the natural geography that shaped the city. The river was, and remains, a vital artery for the region. By walking this loop, you are essentially walking through a timeline of Nelson—from its Māori origins to its Victorian ambitions and its modern, multicultural identity.
Once you’ve finished your loop back at the Church Steps, you are perfectly positioned to refuel. Nelson’s cafe culture is legendary, and some of the best spots are just a stone's throw away:
