If you are looking for a slice of paradise that feels worlds away from the hustle and bustle, yet sits right on the doorstep of New Plymouth, Tūpare Gardens is your destination. This isn't just your standard bush walk; it is a meticulously crafted journey through one of New Zealand’s most prestigious heritage properties. Spanning 3.6 hectares of rugged hillside overlooking the Waiwhakaiho River, Tūpare is a premier example of the Arts and Crafts movement, where the landscape and architecture blend into a single, seamless masterpiece.
Whether you are a local looking for a fresh Sunday stroll or a tourist wanting to see the best of Taranaki’s horticultural heritage, the Tūpare Gardens Walks offer a rich, sensory experience that rewards every step.
The Tūpare Gardens Walks consist of a primary 1.4-kilometre loop that winds its way from the high ground near the entrance down to the tranquil banks of the river. Don't let the short distance fool you—while the paths are beautifully maintained and mostly asphalt, the "moderate" difficulty rating comes from the 150 metres of elevation gain. You’ll find yourself navigating some fairly steep inclines that will certainly get your heart rate up, making it a perfect "short but sweet" workout.
As you begin your walk near the historic homestead, the atmosphere is one of refined elegance. The paths meander through "garden rooms"—distinct areas defined by hedging and clever planting that create a sense of intimacy and surprise. One moment you are under the dense, cooling canopy of ancient conifers, and the next, you emerge into a sun-drenched glade filled with vibrant flowers.
The descent towards the Waiwhakaiho River is where the terrain starts to feel a bit more adventurous. As the gardens transition from formal borders to more naturalised planting, the sound of the rushing water grows louder. Reaching the river flats is a highlight; the ground levels out into lush grassy areas that are perfect for a mid-walk breather. The return journey requires a bit of "puff" as you climb back up the hillside, but the zig-zagging paths are designed to offer frequent resting spots with spectacular views across the valley to distract you from the incline.
The walk is very kid-friendly, with plenty of hidden corners for little ones to explore, though parents with strollers should be prepared for a bit of a workout on those hills! Please note that to protect the delicate birdlife and pristine environment, dogs are not permitted within the gardens.
Ample on-site parking is available at Tūpare Gardens, and entry is free. For certified self-contained motorhomes, freedom camping is permitted in the carpark between 5:00 PM and 9:00 AM, with a maximum stay of three nights. However, space is limited to a maximum of four motorhomes, and caravans are not suitable for the carpark. Public toilets are available downhill near the gardeners' cottage.

Loop
Tūpare is a 6-star garden of international significance, and it isn't hard to see why. Here are the features you simply cannot miss:
Tūpare is located at 487 Mangorei Road, just a short drive from the New Plymouth CBD. It is incredibly accessible for locals and visitors alike.
Parking: There is ample on-site parking at the main entrance, and best of all, entry to the gardens is free.
Freedom Camping: For those travelling in certified self-contained motorhomes, Tūpare is a welcoming spot. Freedom camping is permitted in the carpark between 5:00 PM and 9:00 AM for a maximum of three nights. Space is limited to four motorhomes, and because the carpark and access can be tight, it is not suitable for caravans.
Facilities: You’ll find public toilets located downhill near the gardeners' cottage—handy to know before you start your ascent back to the car!
The mix of exotic and native trees makes Tūpare a haven for birdlife. As you walk, keep your ears open for the complex, melodic call of the Tūī; they are common year-round and particularly love the flowering species in the garden.
You will almost certainly be joined by the friendly Fantail (Pīwakawaka), which often flits around walkers to catch the insects stirred up by your footsteps. In the higher canopy, look for the New Zealand Pigeon (Kererū)—their heavy wings make a distinctive "whoosh-whoosh" sound as they fly between the fruiting trees.
Silvereyes (Tauhou) and Eurasian Blackbirds are also frequent residents. For the best birdwatching, try to visit in the early morning when the garden is at its quietest and the "dawn chorus" is in full swing.
Tūpare is truly a garden for all seasons, and each visit offers a different palette of colours and textures.
Tūpare is more than just a garden; it is a piece of New Plymouth’s soul. Originally the private home of Sir Russell Matthews—a successful businessman and philanthropist—and his wife Mary, the property represents a lifetime of passion. Sir Russell was known to spend his weekends moving rocks and sculpting the land himself, a true labour of love.
The Waiwhakaiho River, which borders the property, holds great significance to local Māori and has been a source of food and a transport route for centuries. The name "Tūpare" itself carries weight, often associated with a "garland" or "headband," fitting for a garden that wraps so beautifully around the hillside.
Today, the Taranaki Regional Council manages the site, ensuring that the vision of the Matthews family is preserved for future generations. It stands as a testament to the "Taranaki style" of gardening—bold, lush, and unashamedly grand.
After tackling those garden hills, you’ll likely be looking for a caffeine fix or a hearty meal. Fortunately, you are spoilt for choice in this part of New Plymouth.
Tūpare Gardens is a place where history, architecture, and nature collide. Whether you have an hour or an afternoon, this walk offers a peaceful retreat that will leave you feeling refreshed and inspired by the beauty of the Taranaki region.
