Waipara Valley

If you are looking for a trail that perfectly balances a healthy dose of exercise with the refined indulgence of North Canterbury’s wine country, the Waipara Valley Vineyard Trail is calling your name. Located just under an hour’s drive north of Christchurch, this trail offers a unique "vine-to-glass" perspective that you simply can't get from a car window. Stretching 14km as an out-and-back journey, it takes about 3.5 hours to complete on foot, though you might find yourself lingering much longer if the temptation of a cellar door proves too strong.
The walk begins at the Glenmark Domain, a peaceful spot that serves as the gateway to the valley’s rolling hills. From here, the trail is well-formed and easy to follow, but don't let the "vineyard" label fool you into thinking it's a flat stroll. With an elevation gain of 250 metres, the path meanders across undulating terrain, providing enough of a challenge to make that post-walk glass of Riesling feel well-deserved.
As you leave the domain, the trail weaves through a fascinating tapestry of working landscapes. One moment you are walking alongside rows of meticulously tended vines, and the next you are crossing through historic farms where sheep graze against a backdrop of limestone hills. The "up and over" sections are the real reward; as you crest the north-facing slopes, the valley opens up before you. On a clear day, the contrast is spectacular—the lush green of the vineyards in the foreground gives way to the rugged, snow-capped peaks of the Southern Alps in the far distance.
This is a shared-use trail, so you’ll likely encounter mountain bikers enjoying the flowy terrain. It is also a fantastic option for families; being kid-friendly and dog-friendly (on leads), it’s a great way to get the whole "whānau" out into the fresh air. Just remember that you are a guest on private land. You’ll be passing through working farms and producing vineyards, so keep an eye out for farm machinery and always leave gates exactly as you found them.
The Waipara Valley Vineyard Trail is packed with scenic and historic gems that make every kilometre interesting.
The Vineyard Vistas The absolute standout feature of this walk is the intimacy it offers with the viticultural process. Unlike many walks that skirt around the edges of industry, this path takes you right into the heart of the action. During autumn, the leaves turn a brilliant fiery gold, while in spring, the bright green of new growth is a sight to behold. The panoramic views from the highest points of the trail offer a 360-degree appreciation of the North Canterbury landscape.
The primary starting point for the Waipara Valley Vineyard Trail is Glenmark Domain, located near Waipara township. Here, you'll find ample parking facilities, along with public toilets and free camping sites, making it a convenient base for your hike or cycle.

Out and back
Historic Glenmark Church Near the start of your journey, take a moment to appreciate the Glenmark Church. This beautiful building is a nod to the region's colonial past and provides a sense of the long history of farming in the area before the first vines were ever planted in the 1980s.
Cellar Door Access It is rare to find a hiking trail that offers direct "walk-in" access to award-winning wineries. The trail passes or provides easy detours to some of the biggest names in New Zealand wine. Whether it’s the architectural elegance of Black Estate or the organic charm of Greystone, the ability to pause your hike for a professional tasting is a luxury few other New Zealand trails can match.
Reaching the trail is a breeze. From Christchurch, head north on State Highway 1 for approximately 45 to 60 minutes. As you reach the Waipara township, follow the signs for the Glenmark Domain.
The Domain is the primary starting point and offers ample parking for cars and campervans. It is an excellent base for the day, featuring public toilets and even free camping sites if you’re looking to make a weekend of it. If you are coming from the north (Kaikōura or Hanmer Springs), Waipara is a natural stopping point before the final leg into the city.
While the landscape is dominated by vines and pasture, there is plenty of birdlife to keep an eye out for. The most common companion you’ll have on the trail is the Pīwakawaka (fantail). These cheeky little birds love to follow hikers, flitting through the hedges and vines to catch the insects stirred up by your footsteps.
High above the valley floor, you are almost guaranteed to see the Swamp Harrier (Kāhu). These large birds of prey are often seen soaring on the thermals over the vineyards, scanning the ground for movement. In the more wooded sections and near the winery gardens, listen for the melodic chime of the Korimako (bellbird) or the sudden "whoosh" of a Kererū (New Zealand pigeon) flying overhead.
For the keen-eyed birdwatcher, keep a lookout in the spring and summer for the Wrybill (Ngutu Pare). While they are rare, they are known to inhabit the nearby braided riverbeds and occasionally make an appearance in the wider valley area.
The Waipara Valley is famous for its unique microclimate—it is one of the warmest and driest spots in New Zealand, sheltered by the surrounding hills. This makes it a great year-round destination, but each season brings its own flavour:
The Waipara Valley is a place where geology and history collide. Millions of years ago, this area was under the sea, which resulted in the rich limestone and clay soils that today produce world-class Pinot Noir and Riesling.
For Māori, the Waitaha, Ngāti Māmoe, and Ngāi Tahu people have long-standing connections to this land. The nearby hills and riverbeds were historically used for seasonal food gathering and as transit routes between the coast and the interior.
In the late 19th century, the area became a powerhouse of colonial pastoral farming, dominated by large estates like the original Glenmark Station. It wasn’t until the 1980s that pioneers realised the valley’s potential for viticulture. Today, that blend of "old Canterbury" farming and "modern New Zealand" wine culture creates a unique atmosphere where tractors and luxury tasting rooms exist side-by-side.
Once you’ve finished your 14km trek, you are perfectly positioned to refuel. The Waipara Valley is a foodie’s paradise, and several world-class options are just minutes away:
